Editorial Reviews

N. Klausner
"BJORK HAS THE 'WOW' FACTOR."
Ava Bjork's 'Holding House' is a thriller with a kiss of noir. Gone is the formulaic 'solo man of mystery' hero, replaced by a luckless mixed-martial-arts fighter who interacts with a complex cast of characters from all over the globe. The plot of committing the perfect crime mixes with hot-button issues, such as extradition, human trafficking and America's down economy, culminating in an ominous and startling finale.

First rate action thriller about crime - unique characters will pull you in.

I get a lot of novels to review through an early reading program, and this book stood out from the crowd. Ava's research is meticulous - not one fact in the book rings false, which is a sticking point for me. But what grabbed my attention the most are the characters in the book- I have never read about characters like these before - similar to my reaction to "The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo". The 'hero' is a mixed-martial-arts fighter who is a competitor in the UFC, and a secondary hero is a young Chinese girl with a harelip who helps to take down an international human smuggling ring.
The best part about this book is I thought about it long afterwards - the book functions as a thriller on the first layer, but on a deeper layer it makes some moving points about today's society. The author presents the issues without drawing a conclusion for you.
I recommend this book as a good read.

For the $.99 I paid for this book-well worth it!!

Ava Bjork did justice in this book. It hooked me from the threesome visiting the American lady on thier trip to the last paragraph of the book. At first kept me guessing about how the lives of all the characters were going to intertwine, then kept me wanting to know how it was all going to end. Would definately think about reading more from Ava.

A very good read - something different and original- a must read for women

Great book from a very talented writer. This story is delicately layered and is something different than you average suspense novel.
As everyone knows, my goal is to review books for their treatment of female characters. Men might gravitate more easily to this book because of the MMA angle, but I'm happy to say - women should pick up this book too!!!!!!! This is one of the few thrillers I've read recently with fast, exciting action AND well-rounded female characters. Yes, there is a beautiful hostage who is an ex-model, but wait until you see what she does. And the Libby character is one of the best evil female villans I've read about in a long time - she begins as a normal character, but when she snaps, WATCH OUT.

A thriller that isn't based on a formula. Finally some creativity.

I love thrillers, but I've been burned too many times to count recently on mass-produced thrillers based strictly on formula. I picked this book up because I'm a big UFC fan and the main character is an MMA fighter. And I'm glad I did.
This book is a refreshing surprise - nothing is as it seems, even the characters are a big change of pace. The writing is detailed but the plot never slows down, it just builds. The characters make one mistake after another until their lives spin way out of control, but at the same time, I as the reader felt like I could relate to them. I found myself rooting for the Chinese girl big time.
And if anyone is sick of "this economy" - you will be able to relate to this book!

    Great Book

A page turner. Not just a summer vacation novel (although it would be great at the beach), a book for anytime. It breaks new ground in the crime genre.... a perfect crime by imperfect people... and it explores the ramifications of a crime gone wrong. Read it... you will enjoy.

Great read - It pulled me in from the start!

This is is a novel about three friends that stumble on the secret of the perfect crime while on a college trip to Greece. Years later, the friends have gone their separate ways. But fate and hard times draw them back together and they decide to take the secret they learned and pull off an international kidnapping for ransom.

As good as the twists and turns are in this story - and there are some real shocking surprises - the characters are what I enjoyed most. Each of the three friends are very different, fully developed characters. I especially enjoyed the main character, Sean, who felt just like someone I might know, even though he is an mma fighter, which I know nothing about. But I really liked all the other characters too. The bad guy that the friends run into was really compelling and the two cops have a great interaction that is a relief from the typical stuff I see in thrillers.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book and I was surprised by how much I kept thinking about it after I finished.

Easy to read - highly suspenseful

I'm an avid reader and love books that get interesting on page 1 or by the end of Chapter 1. This book didn't disappoint - I got hooked right away and couldn't stop reading until I reached the last page (where there was a twist I hadn't expected.)

you owe it to yourself to read the sex scene - DAMN!

So ummmmm this was my boifriends book and I read it even though mostly I like romance novels. I was not ready for the sex scene between the two cops. Soooo good. And also I liked the ending.

I bought this book due to all the controversy and I was very muc

I bought this book due to all the controversy and I was very much surprised. For those of you who don't know, the manuscript was seized by the police. Let me just say, I can see why the government doesn't want this type of plot out there. I won't tell you why- you'll have to read the book for yourself. Putting the controversy aside, Holding House by Ava Bjork is one of the better thrillers I have ever read. I'm very surprised a sweet looking suburban mom could've ever come up with a crime like this, but more power to her and it makes it all the more fun. It's a shame that in the U.S.A. people can still be arrested for their writing. Whatever happened to the First Amendment?

A new mystery writer, full of surprises!

Holding House was a gift from a friend who knows I like reading mysteries. Lucky me! While I have my favorite writers and am picky about what I read, Ava Bjork, new on the scene, is now on my list of fave mystery writers. The elements of the well-paced plot are fresh, clever, and compelling, and the characters multi-layered and believable. The circumstances progress naturally from the actions of the characters; the subject matter is original and nothing seems contrived. I thought I would skim through the martial arts parts, but I couldn't skim through any of this engaging book. Though I don't tend to give books as gifts-nor recommend them, books being such personal choices-I bought four copies as gifts for friends.
