Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
When a hole appears in the road, it needs a new surface. On double-page spreads, Wood clearly and simply describes and depicts the steps necessary to perform the repairs and the busy people who do them. A backhoe loader breaks up the old road faster than a man with a drill can. A mini-excavator enlarges the hole; a digger loads the rubble onto a dump truck. Crushed stones fill the hole; a paver spreads hot asphalt for the hard surface. A roller rolls it flat; a sweeper sweeps it clean, and the road is ready. Front and back end-papers display detailed labeled watercolor paintings of each piece of machinery with driver; the double-page scenes show them in action. Below the paintings are the simplest of sentences, one per page, describing that action in large, dark type for easy reading. The line of the road goes across all the pages, while fencing, a few birds, and curious bystanders add to the scene without distracting from the work at hand. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz

PreS-K

Wood's straightforward plot focuses on the use of construction equipment and work vehicles. A multicultural team goes about its business repairing a hole in the road while curious onlookers observe. Each spread includes two short sentences that reiterate what's happening in the full-color artwork. The illustrations establish a happy mood; they portray attentive children watching the workers complete their jobs. Wood incorporates great details into the art; dogs are tucked into pictures, and some of the spreads add their own visual subplots. Vehicles found within the book are replicated on the endpapers. This slight story is a worthy additional purchase where materials on construction are popular.-Lynn K. Vanca, Akron-Summit County Public Library, Richfield, OH

Kirkus Reviews

Wood's latest will be a hit with the construction enthusiasts, but her point of view keeps readers at an uncomfortable distance. When a hole is discovered in the road, workers come with a drill to break up the road around it, preparing the way for a new surface. From there, the trucks take over much of the work of hammering, digging up the hole and scooping up the debris, filling the hole with stones and asphalt, smoothing it out and finally sweeping it. Youngsters will learn the names of the different construction trucks as well as the jobs they do, but they never even get a gander at the hole that caused all the trouble in the first place: Wood's perspective is from the side, Donald Crews–like, limiting the view of readers. Nevertheless, the brilliantly colored and very detailed images of the construction vehicles are sure to please. The busy workers and watchers (of many colors and ages and both genders) will keep young readers intent on scanning the artwork for details. (Picture book. 3-6)
