Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The Holly Pond Hill Christmas Treasury by Paul Kortepeter, illus. by Susan Wheeler, features the Boxwood bunnies celebrating the Christmas season with stories, poems, recipes and songs. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
The Boxwood Bunnies of Holly Pond Hill are featured in this Christmas collection. There is a December calendar with suggestions for activities for each day. The book is then divided into four sections: Snow, Songs, Sweets, and Surprises. Each section begins with two short poems, most of which are anonymous. There are recipes for cookies, marshmallow crisp snowmen, and gifts such as picture frames and mocha mix. There are several stories of two to three pages and the music for five Christmas carols is included. The last, in which the parents surprise the children on Christmas morning, is the best. The other stories have a more adult tone to them. The book ends with an acrostic poem, Merry Christmas, published in St. Nicholas Magazine in January 1897. The author and illustrator created the Holly Pond Hill line of greeting cards. There is a Victorian look to the illustrations of these bunnies in long dresses and capes, the snowy landscapes and the sweet shop. While there are several nice touches here, overall, there is a feeling of sentimental nostalgia. 2003, Dutton, Ages 5 to 8.

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-As a family of bunnies gets ready for Christmas, readers are presented with a mishmash of poetry, craft ideas, recipes, songs, and original stories about them, accompanied by detailed watercolors depicting the Boxwoods in cozy, old-fashioned surroundings. The recipes and crafts are appealing, although children will definitely need adult help, but the stories and poems won't arouse much interest. The book is attractive, with colorful holiday borders around every page and warm, quaint illustrations of Victorian rabbits, but the content doesn't add anything new or exciting to holiday shelves.-E. For Susan Wheeler fans!

Those who are into the art work ofSusan Wheeler and delight in hercharming world of Holly Pond Hill, will want to add this book to theircollection. As a book for childrenwith its Christmas theme, I think itis more suited for 11-year olds whohaven't yet been lured into a Barbieor pop culture -- there are still some around!! Wheeler's enchantinganimals are celebrating the Christmasseason in this book, and many familiar traditions are depicted. Herversion of Santa on the rooftop willbring a smile! This book is not as anelaborate edition as her 'Hugs andKisses Contest', but still one thatwill please and touch the heart.
