Overview

Hollywood Interviews brings together seven directors--Francis Ford Coppola, Brian de Palma, Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, Tim Burton, and Joel and Ethan Coen--who together represent the leading auteurs of contemporary cinema. The interviews were all commissioned for the legendary film collective Cahiers du Cinema, the first group of critics to treat films, particularly Hollywood films, as a serious art form. Conducted in the tradition of Cahiers' famously in-depth, critical and engaged style, these interviews catch each director at a crucial juncture in his development as an artist, and stand as a historical record of Hollywood's dominance in cinematic art.

Editorial Reviews

Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Eastwood, Scorsese, Coppola, De Palma, Burton, the Coen brothers - the signature filmmakers of our time sit still for marvellous in-depth conversations at pivotal moments in their careers. What could be better?
Library Journal
The influential French periodical Cahiers du Cin ma largely popularized the "auteur" theory of filmmaking in the 1950s. According to this now widely accepted idea, the director can be the "author" of a film even if it was written by someone else and was, in fact, a collaboration. This authorship is most often characterized by a unity of theme(s) throughout the director's body of work. Cahiers has conducted interviews with seven American directors considered auteurs: Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Ethan and Joel Coen, Brian de Palma, and Tim Burton. Because these interviews are reprints from the 1980s and early 1990s, they often focus on films that were released more than 25 years ago. Although much of this material is of interest, it has appeared in numerous books and articles, and by now the (sometimes trite) questions posed and the directors' replies evoke deja vu. There is little here that merits this book's inclusion in any but the most comprehensive cinema collections.-Roy Liebman, Los Angeles P.L. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

Cahiers du Cinema was founded in 1951 and brought together film-makers and critics who established film as the art form of the twentieth century. It was the directors at Cahiers--including Truffaut and Godard--who created the influential New Wave cinema of the 1960s, and declared Hollywood's leading directors artists to be taken seriously.
