Hollywood Sings: The Guys

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
This British compilation contains 20 performances by six male singers who were also movie stars in the 1930s and '40s -- five by Bing Crosby, four each by Kenny Baker and Danny Kaye, three by Tony Martin, and two each by Al Jolson and Dick Powell. One might draw the inference that these are soundtrack recordings, but they are actually studio renditions of, for instance, songs that Crosby sang in If I Had My Way 1940, Road to Singapore, and Road to Morocco 1942, that Powell sang in Naughty But Nice 1939, and that Baker sang in The Goldwyn Follies 1938. Some of the songs are more associated with the singers than with films: Al Jolson was performing "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody" and "April Showers" before the movies had sound, and Danny Kaye made his mark on Broadway singing "Tchaikovsky And Other Russians" in the musical Lady in the Dark, but he didn't appear in the film version. Lacking in annotations and containing too few different performers, this compilation is a good idea in theory that hasn't amounted to much in practice.
