Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This timely work offers a brief glimpse into the life and teachings of Joseph Ratzinger. Tobin (Selecting the Pope: Uncovering the Mysteries of Papal Elections) details the major events of April 2005, beginning with the death of John Paul II, the Conclave, and the first official comments of the 262d successor to St. Peter. Part 1 is a broad history of the papacy from Jesus' words "tu es Petrus" to the recent pontificate of Karol Wojtyla. Part 2 looks at Ratzinger's life as a youth, priest, scholar, bishop, and head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Also included are a chapter that articulates the current state of affairs in the Catholic world and speculates on how Benedict XVI will respond to them; a helpful chronology; and single-sentence biographies of all 263 popes. Tobin is a skillful writer who makes ecclesiastical protocol easily understood to the general reader.
