Overview

Set 3,000 years apart, two stories are strangely interlaced. From the Bible comes the puzzling account of two brothers, who, though Priests, die mysteriously in the Tabernacle in the wilderness. What were these sons of Aaron the High Priest of Israel doing in that holy place late at night? How did they die? Who had motive to kill them?

Investigation casts suspicion on a host of relatives including their uncle Moses, their father Aaron, their mother Elisheva, among others. The desert setting evokes unusual scenes; unfolding events provide insights and questions relevant to today.

The parallel account begins at the onset of World War II. Two brothers are growing up in a loving Sephardic family in Sarajevo. Their parents are killed by the Croatian Ustashe. Suddenly left on their own, the very survival of these pre-teens depends upon non-Jewish neighbors and Partisans. In the rugged mountains of Yugoslavia they barely survive. After the war, they find their way to Palestine, marry, fight in the War of Independence, and try to get on with their lives until....

Though separated by three millennia in time and set in totally different environments, the stories maintain a parallelism that is often stunning. The first story begins with the death of two brothers, while the second begins with the death of the parents of two brothers. The dramatic ending of each story brings, in an unexpected way, resolution and perhaps a sense of redemption.

    Truly great read!

The writing in Holy Fire is fresh and eloquent without interfering with the flow of the story. The parallel storylines, that the author so effectively interweaves, leads the reader to a greater understanding of the Jewish condition, and as a result of the human condition. Truly a great read!
