Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Carole E. Torok, PhD, RN, C (SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica-Rome)
Description: This manual provides essential information relevant to home care compliance issues, particularly in the areas of legal and accreditation compliance. There is a focus on home care standards analysis, and reference materials are included that can be reproduced from the enclosed diskette.
Purpose: Designed to assist administrators and managers in home care agencies, this manual balances the need for comprehensive compliance information with easy to use tools that aid in standards examination and quality improvement. Since home care compliance issues can be overwhelming, the editor intends to accommodate not only issues relating to compliance obligations, but also patient care concerns, management time, and limited resources in this manual.
Audience: It is targeted for home care administrators and managers, although it is useful for staff to appreciate all that is needed for home care compliance. Written with the combined efforts of Aspen Health Law and Compliance Center, the Aspen Reference Group, and Aspen Communications and Data Group, the editor and contributors represent creditable sources for the topics. Additionally, accounts from agency experts of their Joint Commission survey experiences add a personal touch to this reference text.
Features: Using a question and response format, this manual provides helpful and current information for a variety of challenging legal areas, from personnel to patient and other associated issues. Included are citations to laws and regulations, with case situations as applicable. The accreditation section highlights the Joint Commission survey's approach to the main areas of interest in this process, This section includes accounts of preparation, implementation, and assessment of these undertakings from the perspectives of interviewees representing home care agencies throughout the U.S. The interviews are a bit lengthy with no subheadings to facilitate the content flow. The standards analysis section is presented in grid form with comments, evidence, and staff questions for each standard discussed. The tools included for reference can easily be modified and adapted to each agency's specific needs.
Assessment: Useful as a resource reference for home care agencies, this manual serves as a reliable and comprehensive aid. As with similar reference sources, it contains critical information needed for legal and accrediting compliance, but adds a practical twist.
