Overview

Country music star and bestselling cookbook author Trisha Yearwood, host of Food Network’s Trisha’s Southern Kitchen, is back with an encore of recipes that once again share her family traditions and warm home-grown cooking style.

In her debut cookbook, Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen, Trisha proved that there’s much more to her than an award-winning country music career, as she welcomed us into her kitchen and served up a feast of flavorful meals and heartwarming personal anecdotes. Now, in Cooking for Family and Friends, Trisha opens her life and her kitchen once more with a trove of recipes from a lifetime of potlucks and colorful gatherings.

Trisha has that southern hospitality gene and she’s a big believer that cooking for someone else is an act of love. From breakfasts in bed to hearty casseroles and festive holiday meals, Trisha’s delicious recipes are dedicated to her loved ones, including her husband Garth Brooks (who’s her number one cooking fan and the contributor of a few knockout recipes of his own).

Trisha knows how good it feels to bring something to the table. It brings everyone closer together if they’ve had a hand in preparing a meal. These recipes all come with memories attached—of potlucks with good friends, church suppers, family fish fries, and beach picnics, Mother’s Day, and Christmas gatherings. Many are handed down from her mother, her aunts and cousins, or longtime friends, while others are her own contemporary improvisations on classic southern fare. Each one—whether a main dish, a tasty side, or a decadent dessert—comes with a heartwarming story from Trisha’s life that may remind you of some of your own favorite family foods, or inspire you to create new traditions.

You don’t have to be a southerner to enjoy Yearwood family specialties such as:

• Hot Corn Dip
• Cornbread Salad with French Dressing
• Baked Bean Casserole
• Jambalaya
• Pumpkin Roll
• Old Fashioned Strawberry Shortcake

Plus, Trisha (and her sister and mother) offer up loads of practical advice, on everything from easily icing a cake to cutting a slice of pie, time-saving tips; and ingredient substitutions. With full-color photographs taken at Trisha’s home, this soulful and sincere testament to a southern life well-lived will delight both country music fans and home cooks everywhere.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Singer Trisha Yearwood has found another way to reach her audience—with this follow-up to her successful Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen, she serves up more homey, Southern-inflected fare from her country music kitchen. And this newest is every pinch of salt the sequel—from the foreword by her husband, Garth Brooks, and her intimate personal anecdotes to the recipes donated by family and friends (her grandmother's strawberry cake; Brooks's mother's cabbage rolls, her mama's homemade waffles). Yearwood jumps off with some helpful hints, such as the importance of fresh-shredded cheese and how to use scissors to release a stubborn piecrust. The meat of the book is rib-sticking classics for both special occasions and weeknights, like sweet potato pudding, jalapeño hushpuppies, and a Lowcountry boil. Yearwood's ingredients are not for the faint of heart or high of cholesterol (Garth's Breakfast Bowl, for example is a mix of eggs, frozen tater tots, sausage, bacon, and packaged cheese and garlic tortellini). But Yearwood's enthusiasm and warmth come through, particularly in the “handwritten” notes at the bottom of the pages. Photos. (Apr.)
Library Journal
After her successful first cookbook, Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen, country music star Yearwood is back. Writing with her mother and sister, she provides personal anecdotes and recipes for Southern favorites such as catfish and hush puppies. Lots of family pictures will entice readers. This is highly recommended for country music fans and Southern cooks.

    Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood

This is a really great cookbook for anyone who likes down-home, country cooking. It is easy-to-use, and the recipes are practical. The recipes are based on everyday meals, plus some foods for special occasions and outings. There is no need to make a special trip to the store for exotic ingredients, since nearly every recipe is made from the staples we all keep in our homes. At first, I was amused by the inclusion of a recipe for sweet tea, but honestly, this is the perfect blend, and I'm glad it was included! The book has a nice balance of recipes in each category, and was a nice follow-up to her first cookbook. I highly recommend it as a gift to the cooks in your life. It is a nice addition to the kitchen, and now a permanent fixture on my bookshelf.

    Love this book!

This book is just as good as her first! Easy to follow! Great for people like me who hate to cook. First day I bought the book, I made one of the recipes. Four days later, I made two of the recipes. All three were delicious!! Have had the pleasure of speaking with Trisha's mom. She even sent me a recipe that I made two days later. EASY, EASY AND DELICIOUS!!

    Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood

I like cookbooks a lot. This one I particularly like because it gives a different twist on some recipes I have used for a long time. The pictures and comment along with the recipes are interesting and very nice. Most all the recipes use items everyone has in their pantry or could easily obtain at any grocery and this too is a plus as well as the recipe directions are easy to understand and follow. The recipes I have never seen or tried also seem easy to understand and do-able. In my opinion, anyone looking for a good cookbook as a gift or addition to your own collection would be wise to choose this.

This is a " fun and make me want to cook and entertain cookbook".

OMG!!!! I saw Trisha on The View and knew I had to check out this cookbook. I went to Barnes and Noble and had a Starbucks coffee with a friend. I flipped through the cookbook and knew instantly that I had to buy it. My friend looked at it and bought it too(and she doesn't even cook much) I made two recipes within the first few days that I had the book and can't wait to try some more. I love her additional comments that she adds, especially those about Garth. It is a very entertaining book and I really enjoy the pictures of family and the stories behind the recipes. Thanks so much for a great book.

Beautiful pictures, good organization, delicious food

Easy to use, designed for those of us who love good rich food. I heard Tricia answer a question "if I'm on a diet what do you recommend" answer - another cookbook. Full of rich, decadent, delicious food

You can start "cooking with Trisha" as soon as you get this cookbook home!

Trisha Yearwood is my kind of entertainer: A down to Earth, everyday person who makes everyone feel comfortable. I knew I would love this cookbook, and I do! Like I said, as soon as I brought my cookbook home, I started reading it and deciding what I would try first (which was a hard choice, all the recipes and pictures looked so inviting). Well, I settled on the Old-Fashioned Strawberry Shortcake on page 164. It was just like my Mom used to make. Like Trisha said in the paragraph before the recipe, it is a wonderful "mix of the not-so-sweet biscuit with the sweetness of the strawberries and the whipped cream". I then moved on to the Chicken Pizza on page 102 (yummy!) and then Asparagus Bundles on page 127. My husband and I never knew we loved asparagus until this recipe. I don't know what I will try next but I know eventually I will have made every recipe in this book. I'm confident we will love them all!

    Great Mother's Day Gift

I bought this book for my mom for Mother's Day because we saw it on The View and she just HAD to have it! I gave it to her a few days early because I just couldn't wait; she absolutely died when I gave it to her! She's already made a few of the recipes from the book, and they are really delicious. She has Trisha's first cookbook, which she uses religiously, but I'd say the ones from "Home Cooking" are a fresh take on Southern cooking. Definitely A+ material, Mrs. Yearwood!

I love this cookbook and the illustrations are beautiful

I've made the Apple Cake, the biscuits and the spagetti so far and my family loved all 3. I would have never thought to put bacon in my spagetti, but it really enhances the flavor.

    Good "Down Home" Recipes

Each summer my family would load up the old Ford station wagon and make our journey South from Indiana to Alabama for our annual summer trip. Summers at grandma's house was always filled with a lot of family and a lot of food. So as I dig into Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood I appreciate it even more having a knowledge of what it's like to experience good ole' down home cooking where a meal is so much more than just a meal. As I read the back cover of Trisha's book I couldn't agree more: "I have always associated good food with really good company. If you're with people you love, and you're having fun and enjoying life, great food is almost like another guest at the table".

So, if you haven't experienced "sweet tea" (page 54) which, if you've never had sweet tea in the south you haven't truly experienced "sweet tea", a "low-country crab boil" (page 110) or a true "southern red velvet cake" (page 172), I highly recommend that you pick up a copy of Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood and sit down with it, enjoy it's illustrations, stories and, of course, get cookin' ya'll!!

    Treasuretrove of great receipes inside!!!

This second book of receipes is amazing! I loved her first book but find that this second book is even better. I have used several of the receipes and have loved each one. She doesn't use expense ingredients which with the economy being what it is these days is a blessing. Each dish tasts wonderful and they are easy to prepare which is wonderful.

I bought this book because the ladies of the View seemed to love the food

I have only done a few of the recipes but every one I have done the portions have been out of control. Uncle Wilson's Stuffed Green Peppers calls for 6 bell peppers halved and stuffed with filling. I filled the six(12 halves) and still had tons of filling left. We ate on it for days!. Last night I made the baked spaghetti-used 5 different pots, kitchen was a mess and it wouldn't fit in a single pot- had to use 2 baking dishes to get it all baked! My family found the peppers rather bland so with the baked spaghetti I used sharp cheddar cheese, added some salt and pepper and used the diced tomatoes that have spices added already. It came out much better. The directions are easy and the ingredients are easy to find so it is good for beginners. The pictures are absolutely beautiful!

    Good cookbook

I thought this was a good cookbook, better than her first one. The recipes are easy to follow & quite good. Being a mom of 3 I look for recipes that are quick & easy to prepare, but don't sacrifice on taste. Her recipes were all of the above, and the whole family ate them!

I really am enjoying the Trisha Yearwood Cookbook

I purchased this cookbook after deciding I needed some new ideas for snacks and meals. I saw Trisha Yearwood on the "View" promoting her new cookbook and thought "Wow that food looks really good". I am a big country music fan, but now I am a big fan of the Trisha Yearwood cookbook as well. The recipes in the cookbook are all well described and most of them are not very difficult. I do not consider myself a master chef, however, I do like to try new things but will often not try a lot of new recipes if they appear too difficult and or too time consuming and these recipes are neither. There are great little pictures in the book as well as side stories that go along with the recipes. I have already tried numerous recipes in the book and have only had it for about one month. The hot corn dip was a huge hit when I took it to a cookout. The hot corn dip has to be one of my favorites so far along with the stuffed bellpeppers and the strawberry cake was a huge hit as well when I had friends over to my apartment. They were very impressed especially considering I am not known to cook a great deal. I would recommend this cookbook to anyone.

    Great food! Great cookbook!

So, so glad that I bought this cookbook. The recipes are very easy to follow and the food is delicious. Trisha has put together, with her family, wonderful treats for us to taste. She has made every recipe easy to follow. She has also added such sweet family snipets for most recipes to explain where the recipes have come from. Thank you Trisha & family for sharing!!!
