Amar'e Stoudemire's life is sailing along without a hitch. Amar'e sits with his crew at lunch, is an ace on the neighborhood basketball court, takes his school work seriously, and works with his dad on landscaping assignments. Dad is strict but loving. Amar'e is a fine skateboarder, and he likes to practice new tricks as much as he likes to play basketball. Then, at the about the same time Amar'e's father notices that someone is trashing his landscaping, Amar'e and his friends are bullied from their neighborhood basketball court by some older guys. Amar'e does not want to get involved, and all the boys hope that the bullies will find another place to play. They do not. Rather than fight them, though, Amar'e's friends play a game against the bullies. Amar'e doesn't play that first game, preferring to practice his skateboarding. The bullies do not play fair, roughing up the younger team. Amar'e decides to play the older team, and again, they play dirty. Amar'e goes to his dad for advice. Dad understands that Amar'e does not want to be known only as a good basketball player, but he encourages his son to take care of his turf, just as Dad takes care of his landscaping business. NBA All-Star Stoudemire launches a series based on his own life with this slim, quick-moving novel about 11-year-old Amar'e, who lives in a Florida town with his father and older brother. The title ?of the series, STAT, which is Amar'e's ?father's nickname for him, stands for "Standing Tall And Talented": "That's how he wanted me to act and who he wanted me to be." An honor roll student and a loyal friend, Amar'e strives to live up to his father's expectations and grabs the opportunity to right a wrong when bullies take over the neighborhood basketball court. For control of the court, Amar'e and his friends challenge the older players to a game, winner take all. The game's rapid-fire play-by-play constitutes a good chunk of the book and will keep basketball fans riveted. Yet this well-rounded story is as much about friendship and family as on-court action. The characters' easygoing, slang-studded dialogue is zingy, and Amar'e's voice is refreshingly real. Final art not seen by PW. Ages 8–12. NBA star Stoudemire draws on his own childhood and nickname, STAT (Standing Tall and Talented), to pen the first in a series of chapter books that celebrate sports, smarts and friendship. Amar'e is a bright 11-year-old who loves many different things. He is as at home on his skateboard, working on his jumps, as he is on a basketball court, working on his moves. He is a good student, and he enjoys warm relationships with his older brother and father. Friends want him to participate in their upcoming tournament, but Amar'e is reluctant to commit to one sport, something his father understands. "Son, we both know you've got a gift for basketball," he says. "But your greatest gift is just being you." When a group of older boys make it impossible to play basketball on a neighborhood court, Amar'e devises a strategy to return the court to open play for the entire community. Working to resolve the conflict helps him understand the lessons of Dr. King. This first in a series of chapter books geared to young males hits all the major points in encouraging boys to read: sports, peer relationships, the value of hard work and family support. The basketball scenes are, not surprisingly, the strength of this serviceable narrative, and Amar'e is a likable protagonist. Though heavy on message, this will help address the dearth of chapter books featuring children of color positively engaged in the normal adventures of life. (Fiction. 8-12)

    Exciting basketball and a positive message

    Eleven year old Amar’e is a good kid. He studies hard in school, helps his dad with his landscaping company, and loves to play sports. Skateboarding, baseball, and basketball, as long as he is with his friends and family he is having fun. But one day a group of older bullies shows up and kicks him and his friends off their home basketball court. With his athletic ability and the help of his friends, Amar’e realizes that the only way to win their court is to play a winner take all game.
    Filled with the excitement of a great basketball game, Stoudemire’s first novel is perfectly geared towards males, touching on issues of morality, friends, hard work, sports, and family. Amar’e likeable character, wit, and athletic prowess will inspire youth and reinforce the positive message.
    Based on the life of popular NBA Star Amar’e Stoudemire, whose overcame his own obstacles to thrive, Home Court, is the first in the STAT: Standing Tall and Talented series.
    Recommended for readers age 8-12.
