Overview

Alexis Jordan is having a bad day. Her husband left her for the pool boy. She’s living in the hick town she thought she’d left behind forever over a decade ago. The rumor-mill is working overtime, and the entire town thinks she’s terminally ill, criminally insane and romantically involved with the contractor working on the fixer-upper she purchased in a swell neighborhood - two doors down from the meth lab.
Oh, and her mother expects her for a family barbecue.

When a local body shop goes up in flames and a corpse is found in the charred rubble, the prime suspects are Kevin, Alex’s brother, and Danny Salazar, the love of her life and the one who got away. A graphic designer by training and busybody by nature, Alex jumps in to “help” the police solve the mystery. With the aid of a felonious stranger who just might have his own motive for murder, a smart-aleck teenager and a tireless sense of humor, she races towards a discovery that is uglier than she imagined - one that causes her to rethink her beliefs about family, loyalty…even cats.

Struggling against the wicked summer heat, unreasonable design requirements, a house that’s falling apart and guests who just won’t leave, Alex begins to wonder if she’ll ever be Home Free.

Meet the Author

I grew up thinking I'd be a writer someday. I spent a lot of time not being a writer while I waited for someday to arrive. Finally, on the plane ride home from New York after my sister’s wedding, I decided it was time to start writing. I waited till we landed, then went to work as a “real” writer. Turns out, being a real writer comes with petty annoyances like real writer’s block and a perpetual lack of real financial security. So I started writing web content to deal with the financial security issue. And I discovered improv comedy as a means of alleviating the writer’s block. Luckily, I live in southern California, where everybody and their grandma wants to be an actor, so improv classes are easy to come by. I studied with Held2gether, Groundlings, Upright Citizens Brigade and The Second City. Pretty soon I was performing, and then I started teaching improv to anyone who would sit still long enough to let me. I’ve also written for, performed with and directed the sketch comedy troupes 3 Square: the series and Held2gether - the Series. Now it’s hard to say which is more important to me, writing or improv, but it doesn’t matter anymore because in my world one can’t exist without the other. My world is pretty awesome.

This 233 page free book was very good. As with all B&N books the editing, left something to be desired. The murder, violence and sexual details were not very graphic. There is a lot of sexual related content. I really liked the characters in this book. The plot was a bit complex, splitting off in several different directions. I thought I had whodunit and why figured out, but I was both right and wrong. There is some humor and romance. The main reasons I did not give this crime, murder, mystery five stars is because of the editing and the cursing. There are curse words on every page, and nasty ones at that. I do not like it when the heroine sleeps around with several men, during the same time period either. In many of the books I have read lately, the husband has been leaving his wife, for another man. I am not anti gay, but this circumstance is just incredibly heart breaking for all involved. I know someone whose family was destroyed by this and the man's son committed suicide. It is not a funny situation at all. Overall, even with the problems the book has, it is still a very good read. I would recommend it for readers 18 and up. I do not think many men would enjoy this book. AD

Newly single Alexis Jordan returns to the small town where her family still lives. When a dead man is found at the site of an industrial fire, the police suspect her brother and an old flame of hers. Alexis sets out to prove their innocence by looking for evidence which will build a strong case against someone else as the culprit. This cozy combines elements of humor, suspense, and sexual tension. It is a quick read. Be forewarned: there is a lot of coarse language. If you are offended by frequent swear words, you might not enjoy this book.

I thought it was funny. Lots of swearing tho so if you can't handle it you won't like it.

This book was very well-written. The characters were fresh. A good mystery read. Also some romance built-in. I would recommend this book to other readers, and I plan on checking out other books by this author.

This is a great book. I really enjoyed the writing style of Ms. Blackwell. It kept me on my toes. The only issue I had was that the entire story takes place in the span onf 2 weeks. Pretty quick to sleep with two different men and fall in love with one of them.

One of the best free ebooks I have read. A mix of mystery, romance, and mild sex. Few typos but fairly well written.

I really enjoyed this author's sarcastic sense of humor. When I read her bio, I saw that she does stand up comedy. So it makes sense that she uses her humor in her writing. The mystery was fun too (even though it was pretty easy to guess where it was headed) and the romance also added to the story. I highly recommend this book, esp since its free! There are also very few errors unlike many other free books. In fact, I would say its one of the best free books I've read!

Characters are well drawn, the heroine is sympathetic enough that one roots for her without being annoyingly virtuous, plot moves along, and the ending is reasonable. All in all, a highly recommended way to spend a couple hours. Or a few evenings if you read slowly - it's a quick read but not a particularly short book, 227 pages counting the teaser preview and afterword on a Nook.

I enjoyed this book. It had me laughing out loud. I gave it 4 stars because of the over use of offensive language. Otherwise it was totally enjoyable.
