Works by Nouwen (1932-96) are still read with admiration and profit. This one, assembled by Sue Mosteller from transcripts of workshops Nouwen gave relating to his Return of the Prodigal Son, brings Nouwen's reflections on Rembrandt's famed painting of the Scriptural subject, along with his profound meditations on fathers, sons, vocations, and God's love, into the context of journal keeping and "spiritual listening." Highly recommended.

This was written before 'The Return of the Prodigal Son' and was very powerful for me. In this book, Nouwen seemed to focus more on the elder son, or at least that's what popped out for me. The elder son is in the background of Rembrandt's painting and Nouwen brings him forward and spoke of the resentment he exhibited. Nouwen holds up the mirror to himself re resentment and of course, it caused me to look at resentment in myself and the behavior that follows it. Yikes! A mirror moment for me. I'll read this book again and again. It's deep, thought provoking and a huge learning tool for anyone who wants to grow in love and be more like the One who first loved us. It had an extra measure of meaning for me since I have stood before the Rembrandt painting myself in the Hermitage in Russia. Humbling.
