Children's Literature - Michael Jung
Branching out from the successful Hasbro toy line and animated series, "G.I. Joe Sigma 6" is the latest in the many G.I. Joe comic books put out by various publishers including Marvel Comics, Dark Horse, and Devil's Due Publishing. In this story, Charlie Iron-Knife (codename: Spirit) takes a leave of absence from G.I. Joe's special Sigma 6 unit to attend a family reunion in New Mexico and reunite with his Navajo tribe. But when Cobra's shapeshifting infiltrator Zartan impersonates one of Charlie's relatives to steal the family clan's Klesh Staff, Charlie must suit up and track down Zartan before the spy escapes with the staff. Told in the style of the 1980s G.I. Joe animated series, this comic book mixes action sequences with life lessons (e.g., a subplot has Charlie teaching his bratty cousin to value their Navajo culture). Both the plot and the artwork are competent, if a bit simplistic. Still, for early readers looking for entertainment, this comic will provide a nice diversion. Unfortunately, its high price might strain library budgets. Librarians should be aware that they can also purchase G.I. Joe trade paperbacks that collect several issues into a single volume.
