Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
Have you ever stopped to consider just how important your core values and beliefs are in shaping every action you take? The power of ethics lies at the heart of all human action inclusive of those in the workplace. This is a guiding premise at the center of Ellyn Sanna's primer on the nature of law enforcement as a career choice. In this volume of the Careers With Character series, readers will encounter the scope and sequence of duties, training, and responsibilities that are part of working in law enforcement. Sanna does a fine job of providing her readers with valuable information concerning aspects of law enforcement work such as working conditions, prior experience, education, and pay. But, at a much greater depth, Sanna also connects the nature of police work with moral and ethical values that are critical to effective public service. Each chapter contains a wonderful mixture of fact and ethical reflection. Through real life and simulated scenarios, Sanna helps her readers to investigate their own belief structures in the arena of law enforcement. Additionally, the author seasons the narrative with numerous quotations or summaries of character counts information that are part and parcel of police work. The end result of this combination of fact laced with reflection is a thought-provoking book that both educates and challenges its readers to improve. This achievement is noteworthy as is the book itself. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck

Gr 5 Up-These hybrid works try to combine career guidance with morality training. Based in part on Josephson Institute of Ethics materials, each book follows an identical format including the same introductions and chapter headings: "Job Requirements," "Integrity and Trustworthiness," "Self-Discipline and Diligence," "Career Opportunities," etc. Anecdotal stories pose moral questions that readers are encouraged to answer. Values-based quotations are highlighted and sidebars give information on integrity, ethical dilemmas, responsibility, and justice. Oddly, each page has a fingerprint on the top corner. Although the texts work hard to encourage morally uplifting behavior, most of the full-color photographs are of a menacing nature. In Security Officer, men with guns of all types and views of accidents and burglars abound. In one illustration, a police officer is aiming a gun directly at viewers; the caption reads "Not every crisis involves danger and violence-instead, some may involve quiet issues of integrity." Better career-guidance titles and far better books on ethics abound.-Eva Elisabeth VonAncken, Trinity-Pawling School, Pawling, NY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
