Sunita and her fellow volunteers at the Wild at Heart veterinary clinic become involved in efforts to save a bunch of feral and abandoned cats with the help of Dr. Mac.

One of the "American Girl" series, Homeless is narrated by Sunita Patel, daughter of two Indian doctors in Pennsylvania. Sunita is part of a group of five sixth-graders who volunteer at the Wild at Heart Veterinary Clinic. Sunita wants a cat more than anything but her mother is adamantly opposed to cats as pets. The vet's cat Socrates makes Sunita his favorite volunteer but gets in a fight with a pregnant stray and runs after her. The kids follow, to discover in the woods near the railroad an abandoned boxcar where about 30 stray, wild, and feral cats live. (These terms and many more are all explained.) But there is no Socrates. Author Anderson, winner of last year's National Book Award for her YA novel Speak, here successfully meets the challenge of writing a series story with a didactic purpose by infusing it with emotion and information. Gr 4-6-In contrast to the powerful and affecting YA novel Speak (Farrar, 1999), Anderson's entry in this animal-centered series reads like vapid, formulaic fiction. Sunita is one of a group of student volunteers at the Wild at Heart animal clinic. She has a special relationship with Socrates, the clinic cat, and badly wants a feline of her own. Her parents, of course, are dead set against it, and her chances seem even bleaker after a rabies scare and the discovery of a community of dangerous feral cats. Predictably, Sunita does eventually get her pet, but not before readers have slogged through a veritable primer on feline care and animal control.     Cat Lovers Must Read!

    I read this book in only five days because I couldn't put it down!
    I felt as if Sunita wasn't just a person in a book, but a real friend who loved animals just like me. I wished I had read this book earlier, when I got bitten by a riled up puppy on my arm and he wouldn't let go of my sweatshirt even if I shook him, just like Sunita when Tiger bit her. I read this book years later. If you have suffered from animal bites or are a cat lover, or both, read this book. Who knew a pregnant cat and a missing pet could make such a good book?

    Homeless (Vet Volunteer Series #2)

    This is a touching book, and I love animals so this was a book for me. I read it and at the end I started to cry tears of joy to find every thing was sort of alright. If I were you, I would buy the series. : SYNOPSIS : Sunita has a cat but her cat runs away.What will happen when she goes after her cat? What will she discover? If you want to find out you'll have to read the book.

    The best book ever!

    I love this book! Reading is my favorite hobby, so when I saw this book I just had to get it! It is now my favorite book ever! I would really recommend this book! This book is great for kids who love to read adventure stories. I felt like I was really there. If you read just a few pages you will get totally absorbed in this book!

    This book is heartwarming. I was always filled with emotions reading this book. If you are a cat lover, like me, this is the book for you. A rating out of 10, I would give it a 10. Enjoy reading!

    Action packed and fun to read!

    I enjoyed the first book, Fight for Life, and I loved Homeless just the same. Great for people who truly love cats, or just for those who love an excellent book! This was a GREAT READ!!!!

    Not as good as Fight for Life

    Homeless is good, but not great. It wasn't quit as exciting as Fight for Life (except for the part with the racoon). It wasn well written though, but I'm just not to sure about the storyline. I guess if you liked Fight for Life, you'ld like this one. I wold recomand it to ages 8-12.

    A Good Book

    This is a wonderful book for anyone that wants a pet or loves cats. Or even someone that just loves animals. I recommend it to any dedicated Wild at Heart fan or animal lover.

    Like Fight for Life, Homeless is a great book. I love the way Suntia cared about all those cats by the railroad tracks. I also love the way she cared about finding Socrates. I can't keep my hands off it!
