Overview

Twenty years ago, the people of Sevrin overthrew Eldreath, the sorcerer who'd ruled for as long as anyone could remember. A Council of Adepts--men who know the secrets of alchemy and build marvelous clockwork creations--now rules the land. The old ways are suppressed and magic is highly suspect.

Fox Winterborn, a young thief, is determined to see magic return to the land. His exploits strike a chord in the hearts of those who find the Adepts' regime repressive. Whispers of rebellion prompt Rhendish, the adept who rules the largest of Sevrin's islands, to find Fox and put a stop to his dreams.

But Fox has gathered several powerful allies: a young dwarf, an exiled fairy, an alchemist of great brilliance but dubious mental stability, and am elf named Honor.
Every member of his little band has secrets of his or her own. The person Fox is most inclined to trust--the elf who once saved his life--is bound to Rhendish in ways she herself does not fully understand.

HONOR AMONG THIEVES, the first book in the Starsingers trilogy, is a short fantasy adventure novel filled with the quirky characters and offbeat humor readers have come to expect from Elaine Cunningham. Fans of Forgotten Realms characters such as Elaith Craulnober, Arilyn Moonblade, Danilo Thann, and the dark elf "princess" Liriel Baenre will feel right at home on the islands of Sevrin--though they will soon find that Sevrin's elves, dwarves, and fey folk are not quite what they've come to expect.

Though written with long-time readers in mind, Honor's story is also appropriate for a second generation of readers. The next two Starsingers books, HONOR BOUND and WORD OF HONOR, will be available in late November and late December, respectively.

Tales of Sevrin was designed for readers accustomed to frequent visits with favorite TV characters. Like a TV series, each "episode" is a self-contained story within a larger story arc. Instead of season-long arc, these stories come in trilogies. Episodes are considerably longer; at 40-50 thousand words, each story provides the average reader with about 4 hours of reading.

Tales of Sevrin will continue in 2012 with two new trilogies, Stoneshifters and Green Witches. Each title will be available at the less-than-a-latte price of $2.99.
More information about Sevrin is available on www.ElaineCunningham.com, which is updated at least three times a week with Sevrin lore, short fiction, and excerpts from upcoming stories.

Great start to a new series

This short novel is the first book in the Tales of Sevrin series. It does a nice job of introducing us to the setting and characters. It tells the story of an Elf warrior, Honor Evenstar, who awakes in the workshop of the Alchemist Rhendish with only some memory of how she got there. She must embark on a quest to recover a lost Elven artifact (The Thorn) and figure out what has happened to her. Her quest is aided by young Fox Winterborn and his band of thieves. Honor quikly learns that all is not as it seems and Rhendish may have alterior motives for helping her.

This tale is well written and filled with interesting characters. There is a little bit of mystery in the story, but overall it is a straightfoward fantasy. The author does an excellent job in providing a rich history and backstory for the world of Sevrin. My only pet peeve with this story is that some of the dialogue bothered me (especially the Fairy Vishne). However the good far out weighs the bad and I found myself looking forward to book #2.
