Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
Kyla Jean is determined to be a beauty queen even if it means that she has to learn to play basketball. Kyla tells us all about her family and how she has always wanted to be a beauty queen. She finds out that she can be a queen if she makes the most money and most baskets for the Little Dribblers basketball team. She asks her grandpa, Pappy, to help her learn how to play. He helps the team with drills, and she learns the basics of dribbling and shooting baskets. She also has to get people to pledge that they will give money for the number of baskets she makes. She also picks out a charity, makes a pledge sheet, and finds all sorts of ways to convince friends and acquaintances to pledge. She even manages to get her dad's company to buy uniforms. When she has problems shooting baskets, she gets some tips from her brother. When she wins and becomes the queen, her dog, Ugly Brother, gives her lots of doggy kisses. A glossary is included along with a recipe for a "Hoop Queen Cake" and several pages of questions for discussion with followhup activities. Everything is sweet in this story along with the pink cover, the pink table of contents, and the mostly pink illustrations in this entry in the "Kyla Jean" series. Kyla Jean's character is a good example of an ambitious but caring person, and readers should enjoy reading about her pleasant endeavors. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
