Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
The story starts with Trey McTiernan explaining why this is the biggest basketball game in his life. The author then takes the reader back three weeks when Griffin Henshaw moves in across the street from Trey. Griffin used to be the captain of the Goliaths whom their school must beat in three weeks in order to go on to the State level. Both boys have a dilemma they have to face. Trey wonders if he can trust Griffin enough to play with him and count on his support, and Griffin wonders how he can play against his old team and friends. Both boys keep feeling each other out for the next two games. The night of the big game comes and Trey hesitates twice when he is trying to decide whether to throw the ball to Griffin, and the hesitations hurt the team. When the final buzzer is about to sound and Trey has the ball again, what will he do? The story is exciting, well written, and pulls the reader in on the first page. The author is able to keep the suspense going until the very last page. The story is believable, and offers a new way to look at an opponent. The author includes discussion questions, writing prompts, and glossary at the end of the book. Even though this story is about a boys' basketball team, girls will also enjoy this book. This story sure provides food for thought. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs
