Hooray for Earth [Reissue] [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Dopamine Records' revised edition of Hooray for Earth's self-titled debut album, which substitutes a new track, "Want Want Want," for the original version's lead-off song, "Simple Plan," and deletes "Come Again," focuses the disc's sonic attack and gives it a bit more punch. "Want Want Want," with its dirty guitar sound, adds a Jesus and Mary Chain feel and, oddly, is a cruder performance than anything held over. But even here, singer/songwriter Noel Heroux maintains the sense of craft and melodic appeal he provided the first time around. Hooray for Earth is a band that effectively mixes hard rock with pop hooks, just as Gary Benacquista's two instruments, guitar and ...

But even here, singer/songwriter Noel Heroux maintains the sense of craft and melodic appeal he provided the first time around. Hooray for Earth is a band that effectively mixes hard rock with pop hooks, just as Gary Benacquista's two instruments, guitar and keyboards, joust for dominance. When the guitar is in ascendance, so is the rock fervor ("How Are You Here" has a guitar solo that sounds like armed combat), while on more synthesizer-heavy tracks such as "Heartbeat" and the ballad "Magazines," a bit of '80s synth-pop enters the picture, and the effect is less Jesus and Mary Chain than Devo. But Hooray for Earth, on its first recordings, already has transcended its influences, not only because of its musical chops, but also because of Heroux's strong compositions, and sounds ready to emerge from the limited indie rock scene into wider exposure.
