Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Erin Teagan
Little Fish takes his readers through the ocean to meet all of his fish friends. His friends have different shapes, sizes, colors, and personalities. The illustrations are large and bold with one or two fish on each page. The text is fast and fun to read, rhyming in parts, with only a few words per page, and written as large as the illustrated fish. Children are asked to count the fish they see on one page and will be eager to see what kind of fish will greet them on the next page. They will meet stripey fish, gripey fish, scary fish, and hairy fish, as well as dozens more. Children will be able to identify colors and use their counting skills throughout the pages. At the end, readers meet the most important fish of all, the Mom fish. This board book will make a great contribution to a preschooler's library, fun for both the reader and the listener. Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Fish of all sizes, shapes, colors and even numbers literally swim in and out of the screen in the DVD version of this award-winning picture book. Little Fish introduces the listener to his friends in the sea, and wonders aloud: "But where's the one I love the best, even more than all the rest?" Turn the page, and say hello to Little Fish's Mom. Along with the animated pictures, the music, the sound effects, the rhyming text, and Fox's expressive voice will hold the attention of preschoolers. The CD side features just the audio in two versions: one in which the story is read straight through and a second that includes page-turn signals. Children just learning to read can follow along with the hardcover book. Activities are provided, too, with Cousins' illustrated fish stickers and an undersea poster on which to attach them. This neat little package in a resealable plastic bag is a great way to present quality children's literature to children and their parents. Both will appreciate having this on a trip or at home. This is part of the "Candlewick Storybook Animations" series. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo

PreS-K

Little Fish swims in the sea and describes the other fish friends he meets, using either a concept or a rhyming adjective. Based on the book (Candlewick, 2005) written and illustrated by Lucy Cousins, this animated version perfectly captures the book's bold, vibrant illustrations. Brilliant blue sea backgrounds offer sharp contrast to the bright colors of the swimming fish. Animation consists of eyes blinking, fins waving, eels wiggling, fish darting or circling around each other. British-accented narration by Emilia Fox is spot-on, offering a variety of tones and pitches for the creatures. Water-inspired music composed by Lester Barnes and the occasional sound of bubbles play in the background. The flip side of the DVD offers two audio tracks of the narration-the first with music and sound effects, and the second with page-turn signals. Simply smashing.-Stephanie Bange, Wilmington-Stroop Branch, Dayton Metro Library, OH

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Join Little Fish on a whimsical swim through the sea and greet a variety of fish by color (red, blue, yellow), appearance (spotty, stripy, hairy, shy, fat, thin), mood (happy, gripy, scary). Some are particularly esoteric (ele-fish, sky fish, eye fish, curly-whirly, twisty twirly, upside down). An upbeat passage looks at "so many friends, so many fish" before pausing to wonder "...where's the one I love the best, even more than all the rest?" Turn the page to find Little Fish reunited with "Mom," "kiss, kiss, kiss, hooray for fish!" Some readers following along with the DVD may be surprised to find the "gripy" of the text replaced by "grumpy" in the video version; it is unclear why this substitution would have been made. Still, this is a colorful (if unrealistic) rhyming romp through the aquatic neighborhood that is sure to by a hit with infants through kindergarteners. Includes stickers.

    Great Book

My son loves this book so much that we read it multiple times in a day. It is very colorful and attention grabbing. It also has a good flow to it while reading. It also has some colors and counting words that help the kids learn. Overall a great book.

    Wonderful book!!!

Bought it for my 2 yr old granddaughter who loves it!!!! Her mother said they have read it over and over. She even "read" it to her grandfather when they skyped. Colorful pictures - a great book.

    highly recommended for young children!

Hooray for fish is about going on an interesting tour in the ocean to meet and see all of his friends. Although some of these fish are not real, it expands their imagination. Throughout the book the author had some rhyming and it made me like it more because it gives you a chance to sing it while reading. The colors in the book are bright and they would most likely catch the student's attention. There are not many words in the book, it was simple and easily got the point across about who his favorite fish was and what kind there were. Overall, I would recommend this book only to preschoolers and kindergarteners because it's short and simple. In my opinion it would not be challenging for the upper classes.

    I love this book!

This is a great book for toddlers and preschoolers. I knit finger puppets to match the mother fish and the baby fish. Educational and fun, too!

My 3 yr old son and I love this book. The pictures of the fish are fun and wacky. The book helps us talk about colors, shapes, and relationships.
