Editorial Reviews

Zanne Marie Gray
"While technically this is a children's book, it carries such a strong empowering message that we have placed the review in "Self Help" as well as "Children's books." This is easily our favorite children's book of the year. Marianne Richmond speaks to the specialness and uniqueness in each of us. In both her verse and her delightful painted illustrations, she celebrates the individual in such a fashion as to make each of us believe she wrote it just for us. As this book made its way through our office, each person who rad it, form our 16 year old summer intern to our 62 year old programer, returned the book with tears in their eyes, feeling better about themselves, and wanting to share it with someone else. This book made me want to have children just so I'd have someone to read it to. It is the perfect book for any child, the perfect book for that friend of yours who is feeling a bit down, and the perfect birthday present for just about anyone. It is destined to be a classic. "

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-In this celebration of the individual, Richmond encourages readers to embrace their unique traits and talents. Written in rhyme, the text defines "you-ness" as something "Quite hard to describe,/it's your style of being, your rhythm or vibe./It's the grand sum of you that sets you apart./Your body and brains plus your spirit and heart." The text bounces along, celebrating diverse cultures, different physical traits, and individual dreams. At times, however, it seems too wordy and there are several forced rhymes and awkward passages. Scratchboardlike effects add texture and interest to the thick, lush paintings that resemble whimsical finger-paint art. The illustrations depict girls and boys feeling good about who they are.-Shawn Brommer, South Central Library System, Madison, WI Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    I Also Recommend:

    Having "You-ness"

"Hooray for You! A Celebration of 'You-ness'" has an important theme for all ages: be happy with who you are. Early childhood children are young and impressionable. Richmond's book celebrates uniqueness. She defines "you-ness" as being distinct and special individuals. Her book would help my early childhood students think about their unique qualities that make them special. I love the painted illustrations depicting children smiling over their "you-ness." The illustrations would capture my students' attention.

My preschool students enjoy sharing about themselves. I would use this book at the beginning of the school year to begin celebrating our new classroom friends. The book would also work well to reinforce individuality in an "All About Me" unit.

If you like Hooray for You! A Celebration of "You-ness", I also recommend Todd Parr's books below. They celebrate diversity, individuality, and uniqueness. The illustrations are also bright and intriguing.

    A reviewer

I am a first grade teacher and this is one of the books I use in the beginning of the school year. I love the simplicity of her message and the whimiscal way it is presented. Society places great pressure on how we should look, dress, and act. This book reminds kids and grown-ups alike to embrace their unique qualities.

must have for parents and children alike

My three-year-old was given this for his birthday. It is already a favorite of his and mine. I plan on reading it to him again and again now and on into the awkward teenage years that are so hard. I have read it on a down day myself. It reminds you that everyone is special just because of the uniqueness that sets you apart.

    Loved this book!!!!!

I bought this book when I was expecting. After 2 years of reading this book to my son, I still can't read the last page without my heart filling with emotion and a tear coming to my eye. I hope this book along with the love and guidence from his mom and dad, will teach him to love himself and to always look for that something special in others.

    Hooray for Marianne

This book is wonderful for pre teen children, it is a book that a child can take with them all through their life and pass on to their own children some day. I have 3 girls and I read it to all of them and they love it, they are 5, 7 and 11.
