Publishers Weekly
Dunrea's (the Gossie & Friends series) expressive watercolor-and-ink illustrations enhance this uncomplicated story about friendship by first-time authors Schwartz and Klein. The difference in size between Elephant and Mouse makes it difficult for them to use Mouse's favorite playground equipment together. When Elephant sits on the seesaw ("Hop! Plop! "), Mouse goes flying ("Boom! Bop! "), and even though Mouse eats an entire watermelon to make himself heavier, he still ends up in the air. Dunrea capitalizes on the story's cartoon action while the simple text includes plenty of verbs sprinkled across the pages in crayon-bright colors. When Elephant pushes Mouse on the swing ("Swing! Fling! Whiz! Ding! "), Mouse resembles a flying trapeze artist as the swing rolls up like a window shade on the top bar. A dexterous use of line and luxurious white space focuses readers' attention on the intrepid characters; the artist also adds details that children will be sure to appreciate. For instance, Mouse and Elephant sit with their backs to each other and their eyes closed ("Mouse yawned. Elephant yawned") while a fly zooms dangerously close to the pachyderm's open mouth. Not until Elephant wisely decides to offer his trunk as a slide do the two enjoy themselves. "Nowthat was fun," Mouse said. "Elephant, you are my favorite!" Although the theme of this undemanding story may be somewhat muddled, the companionship shared by the two friends comes through crystal-clear. Ages 3-6.(Apr.)
Children's Literature
Persistence and flexibility pay off in this sweet story about two very different friends, an elephant and a mouse, searching for a way to play together. Seesaws, swings, and the merry-go-round all backfire, as one or the other partner ends up flying or falling, accompanied by a text of colorful verbs and onomatopoeia. The lively, comic illustrations are a likely hit, especially with active children, and the emphasis on active language describing sounds and motion provides fodder for discussion and jokes. The story will have the ring of truth to highly motivated friends who find a way to play together despite differences in physique, style, or upbringing. It is an uplifting message, but the pratfall humor may not be to everyone's liking, particularly in a classroom setting. Best read right before playground time. 2006, Walker Publishing Company, Ages 2 to 5.

PreS-Gr 1-Two best buddies go to the playground and discover that their favorite pieces of equipment don't work as they expect them to. After Elephant sits down opposite him, the seesaw sends Mouse flying. When Mouse jumps on a swing, it wraps around the upper bar, and when Elephant takes a turn, it breaks. Just as Mouse has had enough, his pal makes a perfect slide with his trunk. The text consists of simple dialogue interspersed with staccato rhymes that describe each activity. From the swings ("PLOP! DROP! CRASH! WHOP!/The swings were a total flop") to the merry-go-round ("PUSH! WHOOSH! ZING! SMUSH!/Mouse landed on his tush!"), the action words are integrated into the illustrations and given various fonts and colors to make them stand out. Dunrea's clean cartoon artwork, done in pen-and-ink with gouache, enhances the text without overwhelming it. Despite its abrupt ending, this simple tale of friendship is a fine read-aloud.-Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NH Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A simple but pleasing story of two animal friends, Mouse and Elephant, who have trouble playing together at the playground because of their extreme size differences. Quickly, after accidentally breaking the seesaw and a swing, Mouse and Elephant realize that the playground doesn't suit their needs and they improvise by using elephant's trunk as a slide. Written in spare and sometimes flat text, fun onomatopoeic words like slurp, whoosh and crunch featured in large bright-colored text help pep up this story and make it a potentially lively title for group read-aloud sessions. Additionally, Dunrea's light and playful illustrations of Mouse and Elephant in pen-and-ink and gouache add silliness and enhance the disparity between the character's sizes. An accessible, but not overly exciting introduction to the concept of size differences and friendship. (Picture book. 2-4)

    Absolutely Magical!

My five-year-old son begs me to read this book to him every night! The subtle innuendos speak volumes on the modern racism that plagues this great land still to this day! And the mouse is so silly!

    'Hop! Plop!' Super duper!

Totally charming from first word to last, but better than that -- it's full of life's lessons. In a world where differences divide us, our heroes, an elephant and a mouse, overcome their differences and through the bonds of friendship enhance eachother's lives. It's heart-warming. My three-year-old can not hear it enough times... and she loves to look at the illustrations which could not be more perfect. Can't wait for the sequel.
