The English music press can never let anyone be. They're always quick to hail the next big thing, and in this case, the next big Coldplay is Keane. Keane haven't positioned themselves to be kings of anything, though, let alone the next Coldplay. All Music Guide - MacKenzie Wilson
The English music press can never let anyone be. They're always quick to hail the next big thing, and in this case, the next big Coldplay is Keane. Lowgold briefly held that title upon its debut release in 2001, but U.K. critics rushed to give that crown to someone else. Keane haven't positioned themselves to be kings of anything, though, let alone the next Coldplay. Sure, Coldplay's biggest hit to date, "Clocks," included only pianos, and they released the Safety EP on Fierce Panda, which is also Keane's label, but those are the only things Keane have in common with Coldplay. Alongside their beautiful, emotive dalliance of instrumentation is one thing that'll separate Keane from all the rest, and that's drive. The band's open-hearted ambition on Hopes and Fears is audible on every song. Lead vocalist Tom Chaplin's rich vocals are as vibrant as any choir, and track such as "This Is the Last Time," "Bend and Break," and "Can't Stop Now" reflect Keane's more savory, dramatic moments. Confidence bursts throughout, and for a band that has been around seven years and has never released a studio full-length album until now, achieving nearly epic-like status is quite impressive. Keane obviously have the songs and they have a strong voice leading the front; however, Tim Rice-Oxley piano/keyboards/bass and Richard Hughes drums allow Hopes and Fears to come alive with glamour and without the sheen of slick studio production. Even slow build-up tracks like "Bedshaped" and "We Might as Well Be Strangers" are just as passionate, if not more so, than some of the bigger numbers on the album. Some might find Keane's debut a bit stagy, or too theatrical at first, but that's okay. Listening to "Somewhere Only We Know" alone a few times is more than enough to convince you that Keane stand next to Coldplay -- challenging them rather than emulating -- and it's a respectable match at that.

Cynics may find this nonstop ear candy hard to swallow, but what's the point of resisting such delirious beauty when submitting to it feels so good?

    a reviewer

This c.d seems so basic but when you listen to all of the songs, such power is found within them. I am a devout fan and I know that if you take the time to listen, you will be too!

    Keane's Fabulous Debut!

Keane's debut album is something I play almost every day! Tom Chaplin's soaring vocals acommpany an amazing piano and drum background. My favorite songs include: "Your Eyes Open", "She Has No Time" and "Can't Stop Now". Every track is easily memorable as is this CD!

    Groundbreaking

This band is great. If you don't like them right out of the box or if you only like "somewhere only we know" on Hopes and Fears that's fine. Just give them time. When I bought the CD, I only liked "somewhere only we know". Now I like every song equally. It's such a simple set up: keyboards, drums, vocals, and a little bass. Yet everything blends together so well that it produces this awesome sound. Believe me-they're better then Coldplay or what U2 has become. This is the band to keep an eye on in the future. Truly unique and worth your time.

    Well Worth the Money

I am highly reluctant to buy new cds, because most of the time, i end up becoming bored with them a couple weeks after the purchase. Then I feel terrible for having wasted my money. This cd broke the mold, and it is definitely well worth every penny! I LOVE IT!

    It was okay...

'Hopes and Fears' was an okay album, not too many songs I enjoyed...I rarely listen to it anymore. Unless, of course, I'd like something soft to help me sleep. 'Somewhere Only We Know' was the only song I really enjoyed.

    Keane is amazing!!!

Keane is an amazing band! They sound NOTHING like Coldplay. They have their own unique sound, and I love them so much. The whole album is beautiful. If you can, see them in concert, because they are awesome.

    WOW! A MUST-BUY CD :)

The BEST CD out there! The new Coldplay "X & Y" is also superb. I love ALL the tracks of this album. The way they interact piano with a techno-like atmosphere brings great music!

    Keane is superb!!

I started getting impressed with Keane when I saw "Everybody`s Changing" on TV. I like their performance, song, and lyric. Then I bought the album and found that all the songs are great!! My favourite songs must be Everybody`s Changing, Bedshapped, and This Is The last Time.

    One of the best!

I first heard one of Keane's songs on Ellen Degeneres's talk show. They are very original in that they have no guitarist but one lead singer, a drummer and a pianist. I ran out to the store right away to pick up their album. I haven't stopped listening to it for about three weeks now. The songs are so great and the lead singer has a very unique voice. I would say they are a cross between Coldplay and Travis, but better. Great buy!

    Excellent Album in Every Way

I was already familiar with the song' Somewhere only we Know', but last night I was in record store and they were playing the CD and I knew I had to have it. The harmony, vocals, lyrics, and instrumentation is all so unbelievalbly beautiful.

One of the Best CDs I've Ever Bought

I automatically knew I would love this CD when I first opened it and saw a black piano silhoutted against a white background on the back of the CD booklet. Every track is meaningful and highly enjoyable. It's not just cheap lyrics and unoriginal musicality - it's REAL music, beautifully harmonized and vocalized. And it unmistakably comes with some great piano!

    My Favorite Band

Keane is amazing--their lyrics and music are beautiful and full of emotion. I can see how people might call them the next Coldplay...there's a certain similarity, but they have their own unique sound.

    Best Debut for Years....!

Prepared to be disappointed after hearing the awesome 'Somewhere Only We Know'...but these guys have managed a brilliant, complete album that reminds me of the Bee Gees UK debut in 1967. Fully-formed sound, great voice, perfect instrumentation and hooks to fall asleep to and wake up with. Ignore the music press as they build only to destroy and these guys are keepers.

    Another "great" brit band...

Just what is the secret of these brit bands...this is another stellar effort...i dont think this band can be compared to coldplay since the sound is different...but equally good! The album will sit proudly in your music collection next to coldplay or radiohead...
