Published last spring, the English edition of RABBIT'S BEDTIME received great acclaim. It was chosen for the Read to Grow literacy program. Here is what Kirkus Reviews had to say about the book: “As a young rabbit prepares for sleep, the pleasures of the day are recounted in couplets: ‘Time with others. Time alone. Time to nurture seeds I’ve sown.’ In the day, there was also time to play, sing, cuddle, and hug. Each activity is impressively captured in Wallace’s distinctive cut-paper artwork; the colors invite readers to linger, and the scenes are immediately recognizable. The positions struck by the rabbits—e.g., two bunnies dancing about in the spray of a sprinkler—are remarkably natural. While the rhymes and imagery are highly accessible, Wallace has added incidentals that expand the age range for the book, such as ladybugs, dragonflies, or a crab in a fish tank, that are fun to discover and identify.”

PreS-Gr 1-At bedtime, a young rabbit takes the time to remember all of the good things that happened to him that day. The soothing text, reminiscent of Margaret Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon (HarperCollins, 1947), celebrates the simple things in life. Each page offers text in English and Spanish, making the book ideal for bilingual children. The crisp, colorful illustrations, "created using scissors, a glue stick, tape, tweezers, and origami and found paper," show cozy domestic scenes. Youngsters see the rabbit sweeping, playing, dancing, singing, and painting. The final page offers a quiet, "Thank You!" An excellent selection to share before bed or as practice for early independent readers. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

This charming book about Rabbit, as he ponders his day at bedtime, is translated into a Spanish/English bilingual version. Each page has a sentence in Spanish with the English translation in italics below. "¿Qué fue lo mejor del día de hoy? What was good about today? Lo mejor fue tener tiempo para trabajar y tiempo para jugar. There was time to work and time to play." The wonderfully detailed illustrations are created with a cut-paper technique using scissors, a glue stick, tape, tweezers, origami and found paper. The pages are sturdy with rounded edges, making the book durable for a toddler's repeated reading. There is always a great need for quality bilingual books, and this one would make a wonderful addition to an early childhood classroom. It is also a lovely bedtime book¾of course, particularly valuable to bilingual parents and children. 2000, Houghton Mifflin, $9.95. Ages 2 to 5. Reviewer: Cheryl Peterson
