Overview

First published in 1984, this best-selling classic is Theodore Sizer's eloquent call to arms for school reform. In a new preface, Sizer addresses the encouraging movements afoot today for better schools, smaller classes, and fully educated students. Yet, while much has changed for the better in the classroom, much remains the same: rushed classes, mindless tests, overworked teachers. Sizer's insistence that we do more than just compromise for our children's educational futures resonates just as strongly today as it did two decades ago.

"In addition to its roaming-the-halls insights, this book offers (a) far-reaching blueprint for change."---Newsweek

    worth a read

Content is very pertinent to education and education reform. Interesting ideas and well described committee process. Sizer¿s ideas are compelling, yet his writing style left me somewhat annoyed and I had to push through the entire book. The quality of the content was, however, enough to help me reach the end.

    Inspired To Make A Change

Sizer's observations and accurate description of students from different backgrounds is sensitive and visual. I enjoyed the 'roaming-the-halls' writing style--not having taught yet, it enabled me to get a very real sense of a highschool classroom. The 'five imperatives for better schools' were a great idea-- perhaps feasible if incorporated gradually and in combination with the routine core curriculum.
