All Music Guide - Jason Elias
The Carpenters were one of the more ubiquitous and successful acts of the early and mid-'70s. This 1975 effort seems to be willing to explore sad emotions -- with the more blithe songs appearing almost as an afterthought -- which is actually a nice fit for Karen Carpenter's pitch-perfect and sorrowful voice, and emphasizes the duo's subtext. The beautifully arranged "Aurora" sets the album's ambience. "Eventide," a continuation of the melody and theme, shows up later in the album. The covers, "Desperado" and "Please Mr. Postman," have the duo adding nothing new to the tracks. A more convincing take on the standard "I Can Dream, Can't I?" was co-arranged and orchestrated by ...

The covers, "Desperado" and "Please Mr. Postman," have the duo adding nothing new to the tracks. A more convincing take on the standard "I Can Dream, Can't I?" was co-arranged and orchestrated by the legendary Billy May. The track has Carpenter's empathy and tone ringing clear. Another cover, "Solitaire" written by Neil Sedaka and Phil Cody, is melodramatic but a great match for Carpenter's voice. The originals, including "I'm Caught Between Goodbye and I Love You," are competent but not magical. Although some might be put off by the sorrow-or-bust ethos of this, Horizon gains its strength from strong production values and, of course, Karen Carpenter's singular gifts as an interpreter.

    1970's Carpenters Fan

This compact disc brought back a lot of wonderful memories...such as seeing them live in Omaha NE!This is one of my favorite Carpenters compact discs because the songs are wonderful to listen to and the vocal and production of the songs are excellent!

    Beautiful Music

Horizon is one of my favorites by the Carpenters. Karens voice is a major chill factor on ''Only Yesterday, Desperado, I Can Dream Can't I and Solitaire.'' I miss that voice terribly thinking of all the wonderful songs she and Richard would have done by now.

    Excellent material

This is surely one of the Carpenters' top quality albums. ''Only Yesterday'' has a great soft rock flair and strong team vocals. In ''Desperado'', Karen shows a masterful understanding of the material, her voice adding even more wisdom and sentiment to the lyrics. ''Please Mr. Postman'' is a great update of a fun oldie, and ''I Can Dream Can't I'' is relaxing and rich, with a retro 1940's feel. I personally love ''Solitaire''... the drumming is a little overpowering at times, but turn up the volume during Karen's solo portions - and hear amazing depth and texture in this soft singing. Finally, ''(I'm Caught Between) Goodbye And I Love You'' achieves a lovely, wistful mood through perfect instrumentation and timing, in harmony with Karen's wonderful voice.
