Meet the Author

Mike Lee lives and works in Denver, Colorado, as a psychotherapist (which he sometimes thinks is great practice for writing novels, since he believes that a lot of what passes for psychology these days is fiction, too.) His previous work has been published in magazines (as far away as Bulgaria) and in local newspapers, and has all been professional (relating to psychotherapy and psychology) or political in nature. An avid reader of all kinds of novels, as well as political commentary, he started writing fiction a few years ago as a hobby, and is fond of saying "It probably wouldn't have happened if they still made good TV shows."

There's a new breed of novel arising, the self-pubbed novel with a great story that would have benefitted from an equally good editor. This is one of the best examples of that category I've yet read. "Horker's Law" has a solid, well-developed plotline with enjoyable characters. It's clearly set up as the first of a series and a sample of the next book is included at the end. Mike Lee is definitely an author I'll be tracking, even if I did predict one of his twists at the end. At the same time, there's a lot here a good editor could have improved. Some scenes are overly developed and go on for too long. Although it's true you never know when something carefully worked into a previous scene will return to bite you, it's also true that these scenes would read better with some judicious cutting. While there are no misspellings or formatting errors, there are poor grammar choices and obvious outright mistakes. An example is consistently using "it's" when "its" would have been correct. Therefore, grammar purists might prefer to give this book a miss. But if you can allow the author some patience, and prevent the errors and slips from pulling you out of the story, "Horker's Law" is clever and fun. I give it five stars for the story and four for the book as presented.

If this book was priced at the high end, I would probably give it four stars. It was free when I got it, and I was very surprised. I usually can't stand to read the "free" books, and picked this one up based on the synopsis... then I found myself enjoying it completely! The author starts with a fairly lengthy prologue, which was a little tedious at times, but the information sets up the rest of the story. Once you get into the characters and action, the book moves very nicely. I like authors that aren't in a hurry, and Lee seems content to tell the whole story, not rushing and skipping from one place to another, like there's a shortage of time to tell the story in. It's not slow... it's just complete. This book is obviously set up for a sequel, and I expect the second one won't be free... but I will buy it. I want to know what happens next to these characters! And isn't that the mark of a good story?

The book is set up very nicely in the beginning, although lengthy it does its job of setting up a great story that a varity of readers will enjoy! Hope to see the second book soon!

Happened across this book while browsing through possibilities recently and decided to give it a shot. Because of the reviews and the discounted price I also picked up the Author's other work - Fey (also well worth a read.) I was pleasantly surprised with this book. The story is well thought out, well paced and engaging. The magic system is somewhat different. The characters are fairly well developed and likeable. I noticed a few of the editing type errors that are mentioned other reviews, but either because I have become used to them in ebooks, or because the story overshadowed the details of individual words, I did not find it bothersome. I am looking forward to the future books in both series and will be sure to purchase them.
