Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Doug, the narrator, is back sharing another adventure and mystery with his friend, Horrible Harry. Their teacher is combining a lesson about colors, poetry, and mail delivery in an innovative way. During the beginning of the lesson, she distributes attractive rainbow bookmarks. Before long, one bookmark goes missing. Then, three more disappear. Harry does not think of this as a mystery at first, because his classmates often misplace things. Then, he discovers some of the missing bookmarks and begins the process of identifying the culprits. The short chapters keep the reader's interest as Harry and Doug become involved in writing poems about colors and in helping with the mail deliveries in their learning exercises. Simple line drawings add to the interest and understanding of the story. This book is a good choice for students ready to begin reading longer books with more complicated plots. It is in the "Puffin Chapters" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.

    Post box fun

Miss Mackle somehow gets an old post box for the classroom, and then has the class write letters to one classmate each day. Once you swallow that, the story is fun. Eight students are given postal responsibilities, and then the class writes poems about their favorite colors, and Miss Mackle gives out bookmarks with 120 different color names listed on the back. The class love their bookmarks, so there is great upset when first Mary's bookmark goes missing and then 2 days later 3 others also vanish. Harry puts on his two baseball caps (one forward, one backward, so he'll look like Sherlock Holmes) and gets busy. He discovers that the postbox is being used for something besides mailing letters!
