Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Goog the cat is a beloved pet, even though he is older, has lost an eye, and walks with a limp after a dumpster accident. Harry, the cat's owner, is surprised to see Goog come to his school one day, hitchhiking a ride in his Grandma's truck. Harry and his friend Doug give chase and have a merry romp through many rooms in their school where they have never been allowed before. Places like the Teachers Lounge, the Basement where the custodian's workshop is located, have always been out of their reach before. They do finally catch Goog and find their Grandma in the school library, where she has just delivered a cake for a party. New readers will enjoy the simple mystery involved in this story and the characters, which are a bit out of the ordinary. This is part of the "Horrible Harry" series. 2005, Viking/Penguin Group, Ages 6 to 9.

Gr 2-4-The children in room 3B want to know why the school library is closed. Their teacher isn't giving away any secrets, but Horrible Harry and his friend Doug, the narrator, have the inside track: Harry's grandmother is providing a special cake for some unknown occasion, and the boys are determined to get some information from her. Unfortunately, Harry's mischievous cat, The Goog, was in Grandma's truck when she drove to school. When he runs away, he leads Harry and Doug on a chase that takes them to all of the places that students are not supposed to go: specifically the teachers' lounge and the boiler room. Finally, all is well: The Goog is caught and taken home, and Doug and Harry learn that the party is for their teacher, who is getting married. Kline does a good job of maintaining a sense of adventure and a hint of danger as the boys head into forbidden places. Fans will be pleased with this newest installment in the series. Funny black-and-white drawings appear throughout this easy chapter book.-Lynda S. Poling, Long Beach Public Library, CA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

Suzy Kline, the author of nineteen previous Horrible Harry books and four books about Song Lee, lives in Willington Connecticut with her husband, Rufus. Suzy and Rufus have been married for thirty-eight years. They met in the state where they both grew up: California. Suzy grew up in Berkeley and Rufus in Sacramento. Suzy graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in European history. She met Rufus at the Davis campus while attending that campus for a year. They got married and lived in different places, including Canada, before settling into Connecticut, the state they now call home.

Suzy taught in 5th and 6th grades at Shannon Elementary School in Richmond, California for 3 years, and 2nd and 3rd grades at Southwest Elementary School in Torrington, Connecticut for 24 years before retiring this past June. She now enjoys writing full-time and visiting schools and libraries. The couple share their home with two cats, Teeter and Hoag. They have two daughters, Jennifer and Emily, and four grandchildren: Jake, Kenna, Gabby and Saylor. A fifth grandchild is due in September, 2006. Suzy's mother just turned 96. She dedicated her most recent book, Horrible Harry Takes the Cake to her.

Suzy and Rufus enjoy attending UConn football and basketball games, and Suzy uses the UConn library as a reference for her writing facts.
