Editorial Reviews

Booklist
“Kline is right on the mark when it comes to both her audience and her characters.”
Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Doug is worried about his best friend, Harry. Harry is acting strange. He is not playing kickball, he does not get excited about the new tarantula book, and he does not eat his favorite school hot lunch. Something is wrong, but it takes Doug a while to get Harry to explain. Harry's grandma runs a bakery from her kitchen and her stove is broken. They have no money to repair it and, now, no income. Harry is desperate. He decides to keep some of the money he collects from the class charity fund raiser to go toward the repair. Doug figures out a way to show Harry that would be stealing. Harry gives all the money to the charity; he and Doug share the cookie they bought together; and Mary comes up with a solution for the broken stove. The pen-and-ink drawings depict the emotions of the characters well. The last page features the recipe for Sidney's Delicious Chocolate Chip Cookies. A thought-provoking story for young readers. Part of the "Horrible Harry" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
