Overview

I was but nineteen years of age when the incident occurred which has thrown a shadow over my life; and, ah me! how many and many a weary year has dragged by since then! Young, happy, and beloved I was in those long-departed days. They said that I was beautiful. The mirror now reflects a haggard old woman, with ashen lips and face of deadly pallor. But do not fancy that you are listening to a mere puling lament. It is not the flight of years that has brought me to be this wreck of my former self: had it been so I could have borne the loss cheerfully, patiently, as the common lot of all; but it was no natural progress of decay which has robbed me of bloom, of youth, of the hopes and joys that belong to youth, snapped the link that bound my heart to another's, and doomed me to a lone old age. I try to be patient, but my cross has been heavy, and my heart is empty and weary, and I long for the death that comes so slowly to those who pray to die.

I've been reading and writing horror stories since my pre-teen years, and while I find the novels entertaining, they don't scare me. I'd thought myself "scare-proof" by books until I read this one. Don't read it before bed !

While I am a huge fan of ghost stories, this one had some pros and cons. CON: Font was small and couldn't change it in the settings. Also, she could have went into more detail about the aunt. Why was she shamed at the christening? Was her aunt a "witch" that the family didn't want to discuss? PRO: I really did like how she described the incident in the room. It was in such detail that you could see it in your mind playing out as you're reading it. Would I read it again? Probably not....

I am not even certain that I understood the book...and the aunt's involvement was not clear in the end. I wished for more of a story....more information. Other than that, this author is on to something and writes his/her prose very well. It was great for free but I'd be willing to pay for a continued story....more explanation. Thanks!

A well written book with a great story. I must admit to being a huge horror fan and someone who is rarely surpised or shocked by anything fictional I read... however this book changed that. The author does a very good job at building suspense and this book will bring you to the edge of your seat.
