Editorial Reviews

"A book even the smallest libraries will want to consider…in-depth hints and tips are the kind most often gleaned from people with years of experience with horses…An excellent offering."
Children's Literature
This book is a very complete and easy-to-understand guide about the keeping of and caring for a pony or horse. The clear photographs will help children (or adults) grasp the intent of the detailed written instructions. Ponies and horses need appropriate food, clean water, shelter and attention. Types of bedding and food are not only described, but they are shown in pictures. Step-by-step directions on how to muck out a horse's stall are given. There are certain poisonous plants that should be pulled up and taken out of the pony's pasture. Ponies love treats. Children may use apples or carrots to make it easier to catch a pony. The section on grooming tells students how to brush the pony and clean its feet. This book is an excellent resource for young riders; it will help them become more confident and knowledgeable with horses and ponies. The needs of a pony are presented in very clear explanations and close up photographs. This will enable a young rider to understand his or her responsibilities regarding the pony and why certain things are necessary. Show ponies from an equestrian school in Gloucestershire, England were used in the book. This is part of the "Kingfisher Riding Club" series. 2004, Kingfisher Publications, Ages 8 to 14.

School Library Journal
Gr 3-7 A book even the smallest libraries will want to consider. This title covers the basics and more: stables and pastures; feeding; grooming tools, techniques, and routines; fitting and caring for tack; traveling safely; and health care. The in-depth hints and tips are the kind most often gleaned from people with years of experience with horses (soaking a full haynet in water for a while helps those horses with dust allergies and breathing problems; human sunscreen can be applied to the noses of pink-nosed animals to prevent sunburn). A spread on shoeing demystifies this oft-neglected topic and examines types of shoes and farriers' tools, and provides 15 photographs chronicling the removal of an old shoe and the fitting of a new one. The text is clear even when addressing topics that may be unfamiliar to readers with no background on the subject. Sharp, colorful photographs portray useful, if not always the cleanest and most beautiful aspects of equine care. This book effectively conveys what most do not-the amount of hard work involved in caring for these creatures. The inviting layout features plenty of white space with text artfully interspersed with relevant illustrative material. An excellent offering. -Lisa Falk, Los Angeles Public Library Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
