Overview

Conformation concerns body structure and anatomy. In this comprehensive volume, Heather Smith Thomas explains how conformation relates to function and what to look for when evaluating a horse. She teaches the reader to see beyond a horse's physical beauty to identify desirable attributes and potential faults, and with copious illustrations and explanations, trains the eye to recognize the hallmarks of soundness, durability, trainability, and athletic potential.

Thomas begins with an in-depth discussion of equine anatomy and the importance of balance and proportion. She also explains how to detect "heart," that indefinable quality that distinguishes a horse from his peers and compels him to excel. The book concludes with real-world applications of the principles of good conformation, including helping a horse succeed by matching him with the right job and what the conformation of the aging horse can tell you.

Horses with good conformation move fluidly, experience less wear and tear on joints, and are more apt to stay fit and sound during a long life of service. Whether you're buying your first horse, choosing breeding stock, or simply want to learn more about your equine companion, The Horse Conformation Handbook will help you understand horses better than ever before.

    Excellent!

Very intensive, yet so well-written and illustrated it is fairly easy to use and understand. Excellent work. I applaud the author, who must have spent an enormus amount of time and reserach to present such a though and well-made book. Very much well worth the money.

Great information on conformation to be had in this book.

More a text book than a handbook as the title suggests, this is a great, comprehensive guide understandable by all literate audiences yet still maintaining depth of information. It has both easy to understand information and more challenging curriculum for an advanced audience. My one critique would be it repeats information several times throughout the text.

    excellent book

I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about horse conformation. It was my first book on conformation, and here I am, two years later, still learning from it. It is almost guaranteed that you'll learn about correct horse conformation if you read this book (Surprisingly, I can't say this about all the "conformation" books I've read/looked at).

I recommend pairing it with Robert Oliver's "A Photographic Guide to Conformation." Heather Thomas will give you the detailed explanation, and maybe an illustration, and then you can open up Oliver's book and see a picture of a real horse with the conformation Thomas was writing about.
