Overview

Like many professional country musicians, the duo of Big & Rich -- Big being Kenny Alphin, while Rich is John Rich, a former singer for Lonestar -- are based in Nashville, but that doesn't mean they follow all the conventions of Music City. In fact, they throw conventions out the window on their 2004 debut album, Horse of a Different Color. They can certainly craft a kicking country song, as the backwoods ballad "Deadwood Mountain" proves, but they don't settle for that, preferring to spike predictable song structures with considerable doses of goofy humor or, better still, to fly beyond genre and concoct gonzo amalgams of country, arena rock, and rap. All of this makes Big & Rich hard to peg, particularly because they come across as a big-boned, country variation of Tenacious D or Ween -- talented musical pranksters who treat everything as a lark, but have the musical skills to back up their boasts. Like the D, they even have a theme song in "Rollin' (The Ballad of Big & Rich)" -- which bizarrely enough sounds a bit like Tenacious D, which isn't nearly as bizarre as how the melody of "Wild West Show" recalls Nirvana's "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" -- and they have no compunctions about being flat-out silly, which is good, since that silliness brought them a big novelty hit in "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)," a song designed for drunken shout-alongs in sports bars. Much of Horse of a Different Color plays to that audience, but the surprise is that the rowdiness is tongue-in-cheek and that Big & Rich are musically clever, filling the record with big hooks and unbridled weirdness. Not that all of this is successful -- it can sound too goofy at points -- but it's wilder and stranger than most contemporary country albums of 2004, and a whole lot more fun, to boot.

This CD is one of the best I have ever heard, even if I have only heard one or two songs on it. I highly recommend it.

Thankfully, I heard a song of theirs on the radio, and I loved it! So I picked up the album today and it's awesome!! I love every song on it, and I haven't stopped listening since I purchased it. If you love "new" country like Shania Twain, and Faith Hill, mixed in with some traditional country and a little rock n' roll you'll love this CD. It's unlike any music I've ever listened to, but it sounds great. Give it a listen, and you'll be hooked!

When I first heard "Wild West Show" it was so different that I didn't know if I liked it or not. It kept growing on me because it is unlike anything else on country radio. Then when I heard this CD I couldn't believe that every song on it was fantastic. I am definitely hooked and a huge fan of Big & Rich.

I went on a recent road trip and played the CD over and over again. Great County/Rock sound. Really funky and different. I originally bought this because Big Kenny (Big&Rich) is from my home town, but this CD is worth every penny.

This CD is awesome...listen once and you'll be hooked. I play it over and over at work and I'm driving everyone around me nuts...but it's worth it. The music is all upbeat, different from traditional country...more CDs like this one please.

SUPER SUPER GREAT. At the risk of sounding like I am just a parrot, I will say that this is one of my new favorite albums. Great sound. Very original. Some of the album is very funny, but other songs are very serious. I love variety when I listen to an album (so I don't get bored) and this album has so much variety. I highly recommend that everyone buy a copy of this cd.

THE BEST CD I'VE SPENT MONEY ON IN A LONG LONG TIME. Everyone should own a copy of this cd. The songs are a wide variety from serious to funny and I think that's what makes the cd AWESOME.

I'm not a country music fan. I mostly listen to punk and hardcore. But this CD is amazing. A friend brought this album to a party, and we ended up listening to it about 7 times. The songs are catchy and fun to sing along with. "Save a horse, ride a cowboy"... a great party anthem no matter what your social circle.

This album is one of the best pieces of work to ever come out of Nashville. There is something for everyone on this cd, from songs written just for fun like the single, "Save a Horse", to a song of redemption with "Saved", or a song to make you reasess your life called "Live this Life". There is a great depth to these songs, which were all co written by Big Kenny and John Rich themselves. If you have not bought this album yet, what are you waiting for?

Big & Rich are adding some rock to country music, and it sounds fabulous! It is one of those CD's that is just hard to stop listening to, and you will soon be singing the songs over and over. They add some spice to country music in just the right amount!

If you don't have this CD go out and buy it all the songs are great!

A Horse of A Different Color, Is an amazing CD and I'd Highly reccomend it to anyone who wants a CD that puts a new "spin" on country. This CD contains some songs that are "classic" country songs, in the way they sound, but with songs such as "Rollin" and "Save a horse (ride a cowboy)" you can tell big and rich have their own style that sets them appart from everyone else in Country Music today.

This album is awesome!! I have been a country music fan my whole life but a few years ago I changed the station. Everyone sounded the same and new artists were coming out faster than I could count. Then I heard about something different! Big & Rich have breathed life into country!! They honestly produce a country music sound that appeals to everyone!!

This cd is incredible. They are an amazing duo that is FUN. It's all about fun, loving everyone and being different. Different is good....they don't follow the Nashville establishment and I am so glad to see a duo like them comme along.
