All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Like many professional country musicians, the duo of Big & Rich -- Big being Kenny Alphin, while Rich is John Rich, a former singer for Lonestar -- are based in Nashville, but that doesn't mean they follow all the conventions of Music City. In fact, they throw conventions out the window on their 2004 debut album, Horse of a Different Color. They can certainly craft a kicking country song, as the backwoods ballad "Deadwood Mountain" proves, but they don't settle for that, preferring to spike predictable song structures with considerable doses of goofy humor or, better still, to fly beyond genre and concoct gonzo amalgams of country, arena rock, and rap.
All of this makes Big & Rich hard to peg, particularly because they come across as a big-boned, country variation of Tenacious D or Ween -- talented musical pranksters who treat everything as a lark, but have the musical skills to back up their boasts. Like the D, they even have a theme song in "Rollin' The Ballad of Big & Rich" -- which bizarrely enough sounds a bit like Tenacious D, which isn't nearly as bizarre as how the melody of "Wild West Show" recalls Nirvana's "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" -- and they have no compunctions about being flat-out silly, which is good, since that silliness brought them a big novelty hit in "Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy," a song designed for drunken shout-alongs in sports bars. Much of Horse of a Different Color plays to that audience, but the surprise is that the rowdiness is tongue-in-cheek and that Big & Rich are musically clever, filling the record with big hooks and unbridled weirdness. Not that all of this is successful -- it can sound too goofy at points -- but it's wilder and stranger than most contemporary country albums of 2004, and a whole lot more fun, to boot.

    A reviewer

Being a complete metal, rock and electronica lover, I was rather surprised by this album. It's bloody brilliant, hilarious, and profound. "Wild West Show" sold me on Big & Rich. It's amazingly powerful, and has quite an amazing depth to it. Very reminiscent of "Run to the Hills"... Otherwise, "Save a Horse", was frickin' hilarious. ^_~ Despite being country, I was impressed...

    Loved This CD

I bought this CD for Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy) which is one of my favorite songs of all time, and Rollin', because that's another awesome song. However, I ended up loving EVERY last track on the CD. I've heard most of the songs on the radio, but the ones I hadn't heard were just as awesome as the ones I had.

    THE BEST!!!

Big and Rich are the best! Their songs are songs that practically anybody can relate to. It's amazing how they can put just enough humor into their funny songs, and then right just enough sadness into their softer, sad songs, without making them terrible. Big and Rich are the BEST!

Country Boys Don't Rock 'n' Roll? Guess Again...

It's been a long time since an album like "Horse of a Different Color" came along. It happens maybe once every decade or so and the last country act to hit the scene and shake things up this big was Garth Brooks. Horse of a Different Color proves that country boys CAN rock 'n' roll, they can pick 'n' grin, hell they can even rap 'n' rhyme. Big 'n' Rich pull something from almsot every genre of music and cram it into this album. It's sometimes a little "in your face" like with "Rollin'" and "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy". You can kick back, relax, and take a groovy-feeling ride on the "Love Train", or you can listen to the soulful and heartfelt verses in "Holy Water" or "Deadwood Mountain". Horse of a Different Color puts some real DRIVE into country music and is a thoroughly fun album.

This Duo Will Be a Legend!

Big and Rich truly are country renegades. They have taken the genre of country music to a whole new level. They have managed to mix so many different music styles to create something very new, and different and still very country. Their music is amazingly enjoyable. Their harmony is spectacular, and it is obvious that they enjoy preforming. Their music is heartfelt and fun. It can move you to laughter and to tears. It is my belief that every person could easily find a song that they can relate to. There isn't a single song on this album that I didn't enjoy. This is an album that I would recommend to everyone, and a duo I can't wait to see live.

    A Perfect CD

This is a GREAT CD. It has such great music such as: Normal Country, "Hick-Hop", etc. Track 1 shows how clean rap and country can actually work if sung right(it does!!!). If you don't like this cd after you buy it, either you don't like normal country or music period, or i'm insaner than i thought.

Wow! Big & Rich have redefined Country Music!

My sister wanted me to buy this CD for her because she loved the song "Wild West Show." I bought it for here thinking she was crazy but after I got it I was completely surprised. It is a great CD that the entire family can enjoy. I always considered country music lame but after this CD and listening to Big & Rich rock out as well as their traditional country songs I love it! In "Rolling" Big & Rich are actually joined by a Cowboy rapper which was an oxymoron until this CD. Also the religion in this CD is also powerful in "Holy Water", "Saved" and "Live this Life". They prove they also have a wild side in "Save A Horse Ride A Cowboy". I recommend this CD so you can see how enjoyable it really is to listen to it is truly a horse of a different color.

Big And Rich Rock Country Music

I first heard of Big and Rich when Save A Horse Ride a Cowboy came out and I instantaneously fell in love with their music. Horse of A Different Color is a great variety of Big Kenny's Rock and roll style and John Rich's country style, which blend together to make quite a unique sound. My favourites are Rollin", which features a 6'5 black rappin' cowboy called Cowboy Troy, and Kick my A** is funny, and the Love Train is a song about Loving Everybody. The more serious Saved and Deadwood Mountain, and Holy Water are very deep, personal songs that really bring out Big and Rich's serious side as opposed to their jumpy, dance tune Save a Horse. Go out and buy this album. You will not be disappointed!!!

A CD you can sing to

It's all well and good to read about the lyrical genius of an artist or their fantastic song crafting skills. Several professional and amatuer reviewers have extolled the virtues of Big and Rich from these points of view. But what most people want to know is this: Can I sing along? That question encompasses many ideas. Will I feel the music? Will I want to join the party? The answer is a resounding yes! You can sing along to this and you will want to. You will feel the ballads in your soul. When the tempo picks up, you will definitely want to join the party. Check it out, and you won't be disappointed.

Best CD out in a long time

I was skeptical when my husband purchased this CD for me telling me that I would "love it." We tend to have different ideas on the music we love. However, from the very first track, the upbeat, no apologies "Rollin'," to the beautiful "Saved," I knew that he was right. Big and Rich are some of the most creative artists to come out of anywhere in a long time. They have a something that will appeal to just about everyone, whatever your musical genre of choice. John Rich has a beautiful, soulful voice and Big Kenny's rich baritone compliments it perfectly. Throw in Cowboy Troy and you've got a sure thing! Lyrically, they range from fun and silly ("Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)") to thought provoking ("Holy Water"). They make no apologies for their all-inclusive style and philosophy of acceptance. Society could learn a lot from them. This CD is well worth the money and time spent listening to it.

    Moves-the-depth-of-your-soul Music!

Horse of a Different Color is a roller coaster ride that will take the listener to the highs and lows any soul can experience. It's an eclectic musical mix with poetic lyrics that will at times challenge you to examine the depths of your heart and at other times make you laugh out loud. A "MUST HAVE" for any music collection.

    Relaxation from Life

Big & Rich are magnificent together. There combination of vocals creates a harmonizing sound. The songs on this CD a sure to please you. Their range is electrifying, going from a drinking song to a party song to a peace song to a religious song back to a drinking song. They are great in whatever they put out, giving the fan a feeling of calmness. It relaxes you. Their music provides candy for the ears and vegetables for the soul.
