The many different breeds of horses and ponies that exist today have evolved over generations. Their development has been affected by climate, environment, and lifestyle, as well as how they are used -- whether as workhorses or to ride for pleasure. This book will help the young horse enthusiast recognize and identify accurately the different breeds. Each horse or pony is beautifully photographed and accompanied by detailed descriptions of the history of the breed, as well as the particular characteristics, colors, and marking that distinguish that breed from any other. You do not need to own a horse or pony to love the Kingfisher Riding Club -- and this addition to the series will help anyone who wants to identify the many different breeds and types worldwide. Providing a wealth of in-depth information about a truly international collection of horses and ponies -- from the Swedish Warmblood and the Irish Connemara to the pure-bred Arabian stallion and American Saddlebred, from the Lipizzaner and Mustang to the Camargue and Falabella -- Horse & Pony Breeds gives children all the practical information they need to identify a horse or pony. The young equestrian already knows the pleasure of simply being around horses, and now they can experience the excitement of belonging to the Kingfisher Riding Club.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"An excellent overview of an international array of horse and pony breeds . . . An attractive and informative book that is sure to please."
Children's Literature
From Arabian to Andalusian, from Clydesdale to Caspian, this handsome volume explains the distinctive features and rich origins of dozens of horse and pony breeds. Organized into "hotblood," "coldblood," and "warmblood" categories, the book discusses the general features of each group and then launches into in-depth treatment of specific breeds. Each breed merits at least a paragraph or two explaining the horse's or pony's characteristics and history, accompanied by a clear profile photograph of a breed specimen, complete with pointers that highlight distinguishing physical characteristics, from head to tail. Many breed descriptions also include photographs of the horse "on the job"—pulling a carriage, running a race, performing in a rodeo, or working in farm fields—whatever work the horse has been bred for. Every inch of space is packed either with descriptive text, handsome color photographs, or brief factoids about horses, but the design never feels cluttered or cramped. A comprehensive introduction discusses such general equine features as markings and colors. An illustrated glossary rounds out this informative volume. The volume is one in the "Kingfisher Riding Club" series. 2003, Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin,

School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-An excellent overview of an international array of horse and pony breeds including many that may be unfamiliar to American children. The book covers the majority of breeds in half-page treatments that feature at least a paragraph of commentary and a captioned side body, and a full-color photograph that points out conformation differences particular to each breed. Arabians and Thoroughbreds each rate a spread, as many breeds are descended from them. An extensive glossary and a short list of recommended Web sites extend the usefulness of this series entry. An attractive, informative book that is sure to please both readers and browsers alike.-Lisa Falk, Los Angeles Public Library Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
