Library Journal - Library Journal
Those interested in horse racing will find this informative travel guide a welcome addition to their bookshelves. Baranzini (contributor, Thoroughbred News; author of several USKids History books) groups tracks around the United States and Canada by region. She begins by introducing each region and its horse racing history and then proceeds to offer background information on each track, including track descriptions and listings of activities, events, places to stay, and dining facilities around it. Walmsley's snapshots provide a pictorial history of each facility at a glance, and numerous sidebars offer stories on famous horses and people of the sport, like 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat and famous jockey-turned-trainer Bill "Willie" Shoemaker. A section at the end explains the Breeder's Cup races which "track hop" each year. Complete with wonderful photographs, terminology definitions, and an index, this well-organized, highly informative guide will appeal to anyone with an interest in travel and horse racing. Recommended for all large public libraries.-Gena Moore, Central Piedmont Community Coll., NC Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
