Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
The crazy love of horses and riding brings Lisa, Carole, and Stevie together. They informally form "The Saddle Club" which also is the name of this book series. Now that it is summer, the girls have more time to spend at Pine Hollow Stables to practice their riding under the guidance of their teacher, Max. Besides their riding lessons, the trio is busy with activities. Carole excitedly and intensely awaits Delilah's delivery of a foal. In addition to caring and tending to Delilah, she increasingly spends more time with Judy Barker, the vet. Stevie is busy planning events for the gymkhana, an event of special games and races for young riders. She is thrilled that Max asked her to plan the fun activities, and she applies her best efforts to come up with interesting games for the gymkhana. Lisa wants to formalize their club and meetings, so she begins to draw up membership rules and regulations to make things official. Unfortunately, what draws the girls together begins to separate them. Carole's focus on Delilah and Stevie's concentration on the gymkhana begin to take them away from the Saddle Club meetings where Lisa finds only herself in attendance. Will the summer and crazy love of horses be the end of the friendship? Lisa's new friendship with Estelle may change the dynamics of the group.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-- Close friends Lisa, Stevie, and Carole share a passion for horses. During the summer that Carole monitors the mare Delilah's pregnancy, Stevie is charged with inventing gymkhana events and Lisa decides to write formal rules for their saddle club. Their preoccupations cause separation pangs among the friends until Delilah's foaling proves that, acting as one, they are a winning team. The vet congratulates the girls for a successful delivery, but none of the standbys cuts the umbilical cord or accounts for the afterbirth. More plausible than Ann Sheldon's ``Linda Craig'' series Archway, the ``Saddle Club'' still lacks originality. Steer readers to Dryden's Riding Home Bantam, 1988, which adds stepsister conflict, or Hall's Ride a Dark Horse Morrow, 1987, which blends horsemanship and mystery. --Patricia G. Harrington, Phoenix Public Library

HORSE SENSE is the third book in THE SADDLE CLUB series, and it seems that although Stevie, Carole, and Lisa all love being in the club, they're having trouble finding time for each other. Carole is monitoring the pregnancy of one of the mares at Pine Hollow, Stevie is in charge of coming up with gymkhana events, and Lisa decides to make official rules for the club, and possibly even add a new member.

Lisa meets Estelle and thinks she'd be a great addition to the club, but Stevie and Carole are too busy with their individual projects and they keep forgetting the meetings that Lisa has scheduled. Lisa invites Estelle into the club without consulting her friends, and they don't seem too happy. It finally takes the birth of a foal to bring the three girls back together and restore the Saddle Club.

I've been a fan of THE SADDLE CLUB series for a very long time, and while HORSE SENSE isn't one of my favorites, I'm sure it will still appeal to horse-loving girls everywhere.
