Overview

Tens of thousands of kids are already competing in the horse show circuit or are working their way toward that goal. Many more are still dreaming of their first blue ribbon. This pack-along guide provides young competitors with everything they need to know about horse shows: what to bring for themselves and for the horse, what to wear, who does what at the show, show-ring etiquette, safety tips, "winning ways" to impress the judge, and much, much more.

The book also features expert advice from the pros: Cherry Hill on horsemanship and equitation, Linda Allen on hunter-jumper, Kansas Carradine on cutting, and Mandy McQuay on excelling in both Western and English riding. In addition, readers will find horse show tips from teenage competitors.

This friendly, informative handbook informs and inspires while also being lots of fun. Readers will find useful tips and checklists, behind the scenes photos from horse shows, infographics, intriguing sidebars, and cartoons. There's even space for keeping a journal, plus a Show Diary at the end of the book. This is a handbook every horse-crazy kid will love.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This unique book is a treasure for young equestrians who have an interest in entering the world of competition. Kimball guides readers through all aspects of horse showing, beginning with different types of horse shows, types of classes, and who's who at the shows. The discussions of horse selection, conditioning and training, and grooming are informative and accompanied by checklists. Details on how to dress for a horse show, plan for it and maintain confidence provide a sense of control, and a number of Show Story pages detail real life experiences of riders. Most chapters conclude with a "homework" page, i.e. questions to ask oneself, checklists and so forth. Wonderful color photos and illustrations support the text, such as a step-by-step approach to loading a trailer or of braiding the horse's tail. Veteran competitors, judges and trainers offer quotable advice in sidebars, all with a positive, encouraging ring. Inserts provide exciting reading, such as "Secrets of Success" on how to best show one's horse. Responsibility for oneself and the horse, as well as safety around horses, is emphasized throughout. Checklists on packing for the show and lists of preparations along with a Show Diary make this interactive book particularly valuable. A resource list of organizations and an index are included. As one who enjoyed Western riding and shows as a child, it is especially nice to see emphasis on the variety of types of shows. A perfect gift for the interested child or adult. 2004, Storey Kids Publishing, Ages 8 up.

School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-For kids who have ever wondered if there is a certain color that complements their horse more than another, what last-minute checks they need to do before entering a show ring, how to dress for success, and much more, this handbook is invaluable. Presenting a wealth of information in a well-organized and enthusiastic manner, the author also addresses the more serious issues such as safety and good sportsmanship. The format is appealing, with lots of colorful photos of young people engaged in riding activities. Both Western and English riding are shown. Amusing cartoon illustrations are interspersed throughout, and a one-page "Show Story" in each chapter describes the relevant experience of an individual rider. For example, in "Moving Up," Jill has to decide what she wants to do with her horse now that she has taken up jumping. This volume is a treasure trove for anyone interested in showing. The advice it contains is ageless and the attractive layout and appealing pictures make it a blue-ribbon winner.-Carol Schene, Taunton Public Schools, MA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
