Overview

When 13-year-old Hilary Thompson's family moved to rural Tennessee, she got a job at a nearby horse farm. She met a wild mustang who seemed as lonely and in need of a friend as she was. She talked and read to him and gradually won his trust when no one else could. Authentic teenage angst with a sprinkling of romance adds to the action a of this story written by a 14-year-old horse trainer.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

Gr 4-6 - Thirteen-year-old Hilary has been uprooted by her parents' move from the city, where she spent her time at the mall and on the phone, to Tennessee. She takes a job at the horse farm next door and meets an intractable mustang. She starts training him, keeping her activities a secret because Satan is not hers. Her foil is the beautiful but stuck-up Elise, who shares her interest in Jeremy, the son of the farm's owner. As Hilary is beginning to gain skill and confidence, Jeremy discovers what she is doing. Since he cannot manage the stallion, he blackmails the teen into helping him. When he is hurt by the horse in a fall, Jeremy admits to his mother that Hilary is the one who's been training the horse all along. She is asked to ride Satan in a championship, which she wins, besting her nemesis. This book was written when its equestrienne author was just 14, which might account for the almost complete disregard for reality and safety issues shown throughout. The characters also engage in blackmail, lying, and other unethical behaviors that are never questioned. Although the author shows promise, Lauren Brooke's "Heartland" series (Scholastic) and Joanna Campbell's "Thoroughbred" books (HarperCollins) are better choices.-Ann Robinson, Moultonborough Academy Library, NH

    A reviewer

To be gifted with the chance to work with and ride horses is the dream of many. To be gifted with the chance to ¿join-up¿ with a horse like Satan is a once in a lifetime experience. Juliana Hutchings has been around horses all her life and at the age of 14 crafted this amazing story of a young girl and the mustang that she befriends. When Hilary makes a move to a new town leaving her old friends behind, she¿s feeling lonely very much like the little mustang that has been dropped off at the stable nearby because no one can handle him. A summer job is the beginning of a friendship between the two. Hutchings is aware that for some readers the terms used to describe what happens at the stables will be new to them. So as Hilary learns these terms so can we via the glossary added at the back of the book. And also like Hilary, we become initiated into the world of horses and riders and how they can work to become a team. Twists and turns, ups and downs, and a far bit of growing up are all experienced in this nicely paced book of courage and hope. Strong female characters and good family values help to round out this story of what can be done when one sets their mind to a goal and follows thru even if it involves a few tears along the way.

    Courage, Resolution and Aspirations

Hilary Thompson took a summer job at the Millbrooke Stables, adjacent to her new family home in rural Tennessee, Satan, a wild mustang stallion, had just been left at the stables for training. Hilary recognized Satan¿s loneliness, even as she felt a need for friendship. She soon established a trust with Satan and eventually became his trainer, preparing him for competition in jumping events. ¿A Horse to Remember¿ is the story of bonding between Satan and Hilary. It is a touching story of trust friendship. Juliana Hutching¿s writing is insightful, informational, and moving. She uses dialog to draw the reader into the plot. I found myself identifying with the emotions and feelings of her characters. Isabelle Hutchings¿ photo silhouettes create a feeling of warmth, trust, and devotion that brings the narrative to life. Young readers, horse lovers and riders will enjoy this book. Juliana draws from her own lifetime of experience and her own love for horses to carefully lead the reader through the steps of training a horse for competitive events. Her glossary of horse terms is a helpful tool for understanding the background of training and the terms used throughout the book. ¿A Horse to Remember¿ is Juliana¿s first book. She is a gifted young author. Her writing and communication skills show promise of more to come. This is a book for pre-teens, teens, and the young adult reader. Well worth reading.

Morally moving and realistic story of discovery

This is a wonderfully engaging, easy to read, emotionally charged story of discovery and acheiving dreams. It is a realistic portrayal with insights into the nitty gritty of a young girl's life and the friendships she makes with horses and people. Great story.
