Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
YA-The strength of these books is their stunning full-color photographs, all of which are distinct and well labeled. Both guides begin with general overviews of the title animals and then present the histories and characteristics of various breeds in alphabetical order, within logical groupings. Simon & Schuster's Guide to Dogs (1980) and Simon & Schuster's Guide to Horses and Ponies of the World (1988, both S.&S.) have more substantial texts, but their photographs lack the clarity found in these handbooks. Useful additions.- Linda Diane Townsend, West Potomac High School, Fairfax County, VA
Booknews
A photo-encyclopedic reference on over 100 breeds of horses. The four main divisions of horses--ponies, light horses, heavy horses and types (hack, hunter, cob, polo and riding ponies)--are represented, with breeds arranged by country of origin. Each entry offers data on history, breeding, anatomy and behavior. Includes a glossary and brief discussions of equine evolution, conformation, life cycle, markings, gaits and employment. Over 250 high-quality color photos. No bibliography. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

    What a wonderful resource

Children as well as adults can use this book. As a home school mom, I'm creating a unit studies around the theme of horses, and I am using this book to develop the geography aspect of the studies. The author tells in what part of the world each breed of horse originated. What a great way to get a horse-loving child to learn geography!
