Children's LiteratureHorses are beautiful, graceful creatures, which, naturally, draw the interest of many young children. As part of the "All About Pets" series, Horses is an ideal addition to the emergent reader's library. Any child with a love for animals, as well as a specific interest in horses, will enjoy this book. Not only are the photographs colorful and interesting, the text is written using a great deal of repetition of both words and phrases that makes it perfect for the very early reader. The length of the book, about 20 pages, is just right and each page consists of one short sentence accompanied by a corresponding photograph. While the book only covers very basic information such as some simple anatomy and very general care guidelines, it is just enough for young children who often become overwhelmed by too much detail. The authors included a glossary at the back of the book to reinforce information covered in the text and there is a reference section that lists additional print materials and web sites. While the books in this series are extremely simplistic, and Horses is no exception, this is often just what emergent readers need in order to gain confidence in tackling an entire book on their own. It makes the task something achievable and gives them a sense of accomplishment when they make it through all by themselves. Not only will this book be enjoyed by young readers, but many animal-loving toddlers might find it worthwhile as well.
