Children's Literature - Mary Bowman-KruhmAs part of the "Modern World Leaders" series, the cover indicates the book is a biography, but, with 93 pages of text, Mubarak is present only in two brief paragraphs until page 45. The previous 44 pages read like a textbook on the history of Egypt, and the remainder is a political history of the last 40 years. Since today's technology can easily access interesting information in online newspapers and listservs about any world leader, the book's content seems limited although very objective in its treatment of volatile subject matter. It could be used as a supplemental text for students for whom a thin book is more desirable than a weighty tome; however, the Fry readability graph indicates a college reading level. Explanations under numerous color and black and white photographs provide a context for understanding illustrations. Backmatter includes a useful chronology of Egyptian history, and books, articles, and web sites are included in a bibliography and "Further Reading" listing.
