Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: This atlas from the Society of Hospital Medicine is a short primer of case-based images clinicians may commonly encounter in their practice of inpatient medicine. The question-and-answer presentations make readers think, a great teaching concept.
Purpose: The cases typically involve practical examples of situations one does not learn from books or from formal medical school training. This makes the book extraordinary.
Audience: The book presumes readers have a reasonable amount of medical knowledge, and therefore is best for residents in training. The author is a highly respected educator and authority in internal medicine.
Features: The case-based questions are a tremendous selling point and the figures are well chosen and well presented so that the teaching points are clearly understandable. The questions are not esoteric, but very pragmatic helping readers to the differential diagnosis with little extraneous material.
Assessment: This is an exceptional book not geared to just passing board examinations, but to caring for patients. I can say this is one of the most enjoyable books I have read in years and I can highly recommend it. Medicine and patients owe a debt of gratitude to the author.
