Overview

Thoroughly updated for its Second Edition, Hospital Medicine offers practical, evidence-based guidelines for the care of hospitalized patients. The only book geared directly and exclusively to inpatient management--and edited by the national leaders of the hospitalist field--Hospital Medicine includes indications for admission, guidelines for consultation, procedures for hospital discharge, diagnostic algorithms, and critical paths detailing effective, outcomes-oriented treatment plans for a range of diseases and disorders. New chapters in this edition focus on the hospitalist's increasing role in providing critical care, managing surgical patients with medical co-morbidities, ensuring patient safety and preventing adverse events, and directing hospital systems areas such as informatics, quality improvement, and practice management.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

New England Journal Of Medicine
Hospital Medicine is extremely well organized and user-friendly. The structure of individual chapters facilitates scanning for information; there is a statement of key points at the conclusion of each chapter. Chapters also conclude with lists of core references and recommended additional reading. The introductory chapters identify and discuss general issues and survey management problems common to many hospitalized patients. They also describe important tools of the trade of the hospitalist: practice guidelines, clinical pathways, quality improvement, and decision analysis. The themes of evidence-based, cost-effective, and protocol-based care resonate throughout the book and are woven into discussions of the management of individual disorders. Algorithms and critical pathways are reasonably embedded in the discussion of the particular clinical entity and do not suggest a cookbook approach to care....Hospital Medicine should serve as an extremely valuable guide to the care of the hospitalized patient.
Booknews
An evidence-based, practical text that focuses on key issues in the care of the hospitalized adult. The 108 contributions cover most of the major issues that arise in inpatients (end-of-life care, nutritional issues, clinical decision making) as well as 75 of the most common conditions leading to hospital admission. Topics include general issues in hospital medicine; critical care, consultation, and cardiovascular medicine; pulmonary; infections diseases and HIV; gastroenterology; hematology-oncology; renal; endocrinology; rheumatology; neurology and psychiatry; and toxicology and allergy. Edited by Wachter (U. of California School of Medicine and Moffitt- Long Hospitals, San Francisco), and Lee Goldman and Harry Hollander (department of medicine, U. of California School of Medicine).
