Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: This is a collection of personal experiences and stories artfully written to convey fatherly advice to young physicians. Each story is followed by heartfelt Lessons Learned.
Purpose: The book achieves its goals very well. The advice is honest, sincere, and not overbearing and the stories are quite entertaining.
Audience: Nominally written for PGY-1 physicians, the book in reality is appropriate for all levels, from EMT-Basics just beginning their careers through attending physicians. Some reminders are ageless and this book proves the point.
Features: The fact that it's easy to read is the book's best aspect. It is an excellent choice when one wishes a light break from journal reading or the newspaper. It's a nice break for a weekend, or for traveling to a CME course. But, it has true wisdom to impart.
Assessment: This is a book that every attending who has worked with housestaff understands and wishes he or she had written. The author should be congratulated for putting these thoughts down on paper.
