    Hostage Lands- Amazing

Hostage Lands Author: Douglas Bond Publisher: P&R Publishing Publication Date: 2-23-2006 Book Type: Paperback Pages: 234 ISBN-10: 1-59638-027-6 ISBN-13: 978-1-59638-027-1 Hostage Lands [by Douglas Bond] is a story about a 15 year old boy, Neil Perkins, who has a resentment towards his teacher, and Latin. This changes when he makes an amazing discovery that causes him to change his outlook towards his teacher and Latin. When he shows his discovery to his teacher he dives headlong into a huge project he never thought he would take on, and discovers the life of a centurion positioned on the wall his farm is built by. The main characters of this story are Neil Perkins, a fifteen year old boy at Haltwhistle Grammar School, Rusticus, a Roman centurion that served at Hadrian's Wall, and Miss Kiltsa, the crazy Latin teacher at Haltwhislte grammar school. After making his amazing discovery he doesn't know what to do with it so he asks his teacher. When he asks his teacher [Miss Kiltsa] to translate it for him she said: "'Neil my boy' she [Miss Kiltsa] said clucking her tongue reprovingly' are you suggesting that I enter upon the translation of the tablets for you? They were given to you. It is thus your duty to translate them.'" (p. 34) I loved Hostage Lands, it was an intriguing storyline that kept you interested and unsure on what to expect next. I enjoyed the fact that it was a historical fiction based on the Roman invasion of England; this caught my interest and caused me to want to read it. Another thing that drew me to this book is the author [Douglas Bond] I have read many books by him and have always been impressed with his books this book was no exception. I would recommend this book to almost anyone. I think that anyone who read this book would enjoy it, especially those that are interested in Roman history.
