Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Amanda Carlson's trade paperback and NOOK Book series continues to sizzle. This standalone sequel to Blooded and Full Blooded pits female werewolf Jessica McClain against a vengeful Goddess kidnapper. That the hostage is Jess' new main squeeze only escalates the urgency of her search. A fast-paced, sexy urban fantasy that promises a fine read for fans of authors like Kelley Armstrong.

    Hot Blooded. Amanda Carlson
    Arc provided by Netgalley.
I enjoyed the first book, though with a few reservations at the start. This one has come out much the same. Jessica going on a journey to rescue her mate. She has helps from two vamps, two of the Pack, and an unexpected extra person :) She's tracking Selene, and needs to kill her to rescue her mate Rourke. Trouble is Selene is a Goddess, and isn't easy to kill, in fact most of the supes believe she's on a suicide mission as Selene can't die...
So, once everyone is assembled the bulk of the book is about their journey. That’s where my problems began. It was OK at first, I expected Selene to have set some traps, after all she's not going to sit back and wait for them. The problem I had though is that each time there were barriers, they seemed to be some previously unknown or rarely heard of creature, impossible to kill and yet...Jessica seemed to develop the superpowers needed to outwit/kill them just at the last moment. Now I get she's previously unknown, possibly the subject of a prophecy etc etc etc but...I really, really hate it when the newly empowered heroine develops skills those who are hundreds of years don't have. I can deal with a couple of useful new powers, but every time? ?Making the existing powerful supernaturals emasculated. Sorry, that's just something I really don't like, and it happened so often here that I ended up by skim reading over the various battles. I did like the way Jessica befriended those who later turn out to be allies. Its clear she's going to need help as the series progresses and that's far better in my view – to have her befriending those with power or knowledge, who become useful allies at the right time rather than her gaining new powers Every Time :(
So, I enjoyed parts, but the bulk seemed to be endless battles with weird creatures where Jessica saves the day. That didn't cut it for me, it got old quickly. It seemed the other characters were simply there to prove just how wonderful and strong etc Jessica had become, rather than people we get to know and care about.. I wanted to see more of Rourke too, even if it was scenes with him and Selene, but he only appears at the end. I liked Naomi, even warmed to Ray...the wolves were loyal as ever, and good choices to accompany her, and the end where next book is set up was good, but overall I was disappointed..at £4.99 for 336 pages I was expecting more of a story about the characters, not just what seemed like endless battles with odd and unknown creatures and Jessica becoming a Wonder Superwoman.
Stars: well just three and a half this time – its better than OK but not good.

    LOVED this  Urban Fantasy Adventure!

Hot Blooded is the 2nd book in Amanda Carlson's Jessica McClain series.  It picks up where Full Blooded, the 1st book, ended.

Jessica is still coming into her werewolf powers, learning what she can do, ascertaining who is a friend vs an enemy and dealing with her human-ness.  In this book, we also learn more about the Cain prophecy and how it puts not only her in danger but those close to her.

Jessica's mate, Rourke, has been abducted by a goddess and this book is mostly the exciting and harrowing tale of her adventure in rescuing him.  She is accompanied by a diverse set of characters, two vamps, two loyal pack members and one very reluctant human.  I loved their interactions.

We are treated to more of Amanda's extraordinary word building  and the suspense she creates with her story-telling is incredible.  The book is fast-paced with a touch of humor in just the right places to keep the adventure to hell from being so grim.

This is the continuation of an awesome series that I highly recommend to any fan of urban fantasy, shifters, and paranormals.  I am excitedly looking forward to the 3rd in this series.

    Highly Recommended!  5 Stars!

I’m a HUGE fan of this series. I LOVE Rourke and Jess as well as Danny, Tyler, James, Nick, Marcy and Callum. Such great characters that feed such a well written and entertaining series. I was so happy to read them all return in Hot Blooded and I am even more looking forward to Cold Blooded. I am in need of my Rourke fix. lol

I was slightly disappointed that Rourke didn’t have more of an active role in this story especially since I love him and Jess as a couple and wanted to read more about them together. But it was still a great read as the other characters filled his missing spot with so much fun and excitement throughout their mission to get him back. I love the camaraderie between these characters. It was so great to get to know them a little better. I’m hoping for a lot more Jess and Rourke time in Cold Blooded.

I cannot wait to read what happens to Ray ~ this was such an unexpected turn and so good!!.  Oh...Naomi...I also can’t wait to read about how Jess’s help will impact her in the future~especially with her Queen and if anything comes from her closeness with Danny. *crossesfingers*  Of course I also can’t wait to read what happens with Marcy.

I love how Jess went after Rourke and never gave up even against the most dire of odds. She is such a great character ~ strong, smart, caring, funny and definitely feisty. She is so much fun to read.

Hot Blooded was a great addition to an already great series and I am so looking forward to more.

Hot Blooded (Jessica McClain #2) by Amanda Carlson

Hot Blooded continues where book one, Full Blooded left off. Colin Rourke, Jessica McClain’s mate, has been abducted by the evil goddess Selene.  With the aid of her brother Tyler, pack mate Danny Walker, police detective Ray Hart, and vampire siblings Naomi and Eamon; Jessica goes on a quest to recover her mate. Of course, the journey is not so easy and the group fights numerous evil creatures along the way.

Amanda Carson once again writes an action pack entertaining novel that you can’t put down.  There is never a dull moment in Jessica’s life.  Carson’s character development is exceptional.  You can’t help but love (or hate) the cast.  I look forward to reading what happens next in book three, Cold Blooded.

OMG!!!! This was a wonderful, action-packed book. Amanda Carlson

OMG!!!! This was a wonderful, action-packed book. Amanda Carlson is NOT a one hit wonder. We learn of many new Underworld creatures. We get to spend more time with Ray. I can't wait to see where she takes his story-line. I really liked Naomi. I hope we get to see her and Danny together. We've been promised more Rourke in the next book. I'm going to hold her to that.

I think Jessica is going to bring the sects together. She's already doing unprecedented things by working with the vampires.

Amanda definitely leaves you wanting more (I need Cold Blooded NOW!!).

    Fast paced

I enjoyed this sequel to "Full Blooded". Typically when I read a sequel to a book, there are a lot of repeated facts, phrases, etc... that I skim over. This book took off exactly where the first book left off. Since I had pre-ordered this book, I had to refresh my mind a little with the characters and the story line. I was highly entertained, and it kept me turning the pages. Amanda Carlson does not disappoint!

    I Also Recommend:

Hot Blooded, the 2nd Jessica McClain novel, picks up immediately

Hot Blooded, the 2nd Jessica McClain novel, picks up immediately after the end of Full Blooded. Jessica has only been a werewolf for a few days. She is the only female werewolf in the world. Prophecies regarding what she is swirl around and endanger her as well as those close to her.

Hot Blooded is as much about Jessica starting to learn about her powers as it is about her desire/need to rescue her mate. As the story progresses we learn more and more about Jessica’s powers along with her. I suspect that we are very far from learning all about what she can do and who/what she is. At the moment she is running on adrenaline and gut instincts with more than a little help from her wolf. Her powers surprise her and those around her. One of the things I like most about Jessica is that, despite wielding what seems to be unimaginable powers, she continues to be compassionate. Becoming a wolf had not changed her essential human nature. It will be interesting to see if she struggles with this over future novels. This is not to say that she can’t make the tough decisions, she certainly does. She simply does not solve every problem by killing it.

Jessica does not go it alone in Hot Blooded. There is a lovely supporting cast of characters with her on this journey. It’s a pleasure reading about Jessica’s interactions with her friends/companions. Ms. Carlson does not skimp on the bad guys. They were awful, of course. There is also a touch of humor, which keeps the story from being grim at all the right times.

Hot Blooded is wonderfully fast paced. Unlike the prior novel there is no cliffhanger, but it does end with new issues for Jessica to face. I certainly hope that she brings along her friends in the next novel.

Ms. Carlson does not disappoint in the second Jessica McClain novel. Hot Blooded is full of action, monsters galore (some of which I’d never seen before) and a psychotic and vicious Goddess. I’m looking forward to Jessica’s next adventure. Jessica McClain remains one of my favorite Urban Fantasy heroines.

Jessica McClain and the crew return in the highly anticipated se

Jessica McClain and the crew return in the highly anticipated sequel Hot Blooded for another action packed adventure filled with magic and mayhem. Hot Blooded takes place exactly where Full Blooded left off with Jessica on a mission to save her mate Rourke from the clutches of the evil goddess Selene. On this journey, Jessica is accompanied by her brother Tyler, pack mate Danny, two vampire siblings borrowed for tracking from the vampire queen, and Ray, a human hell-bent on exposing Jessica on what she really is (Ray is only on this trip because if Jessica left him behind he’d die. She’s hoping that on this journey he’d change his mind and become a human liaison for the pack).

The majority of the book takes place on the road as the group tries to pinpoint Selene lair. The group encounters various types of mythological creatures summoned/controlled by Selene, and in order to defeat them they had to work together. This was a mission in itself because vampires, werewolves, and all the other supernatural sects never interact/or help one another. With each obstacle they encounter, Readers along with the heroine Jessica discovers what she’s really capable of, that her powers are vaster than anyone can imagine. It was great seeing Jessica discover her abilities, every time she beat one of Selene’s obstacle she discover something new about what she can do…the abilities were endless! Jessica is the ultimate supernatural, and like the prophecy stated…she is to be feared among the sects. I was sad that I didn’t get more page time with Rourke, but we got to see a lot more of Tyler, Danny and vampire Naomi. Tyler and Danny are always a joy to read. Tyler, Jessica’s brother is the ever-loving protective brother and Danny is the goof-ball of the pack. We met Naomi briefly at the end of book one, but we get to see more of her and her brother in this book. I really like Naomi’s character because in the first book, vampires were described as passive, terrifying, and cold heart but Naomi shattered that image. The biggest surprise character (after Jessica of course) is Ray. I think everyone (characters and readers) loathed him since book one but over the course of book two he started to grow on me. Ray was still very much stubborn and a thorn in everyone’s butt but he helped the group when it counted the most.

While Hot Blooded was action-packed, the pacing felt a little slower than Full Blooded. It took me awhile to get engaged in the story, but once the action started rolling in it didn’t let up. A lot happens in Hot Blooded with new enemies and alliances made that will not only affect Jessica but also the other supernatural sects. I am intrigued to see what Carlson has in store for all the characters in the next book, Cold Blooded. The werewolves are in turmoil with a rouge problem; Jessica still needs to fulfill her oath to the vampire queen and with the cliffhanger ending…it look like the witches are going to play a big part in the following book. Bottom line Hot Blooded was an excellent follow-up to the Jessica McClain series, an awesome UF world and characters you can’t get enough of! I’m totally looking forward to reading Cold Blooded when it comes out this October!

4.5 Stars ~This UTC Team Review is also posted at Under the Cove

    4.5 Stars
~This UTC Team Review is also posted at Under the Covers Book Blog

We’re baaaack with another annoyingly long, but hopefully fun team review with the UTC Maidens. Suz, Angela and I all adore this series so here’s our thoughts on the very latest, and greatest from Amanda Carlson and the Jessica McClain series…

Describe Hot Blooded in three words:

    Suz: Action packed fun!
    Annie: [a] kick ass adventure!
    Angela: Kick Ass Heroine

This is the second book in the Jessica McClain series, how do you think it compared to the first?
Suz: I think I liked this book a little bit more, I felt more into the story and the characters, the world building was great as we set to see how the supernatural world of vampires, werewolves and witches work. There were also some interesting curve balls thrown at us to spice the plot up. I am definitely excited to read on and see what will happen next.

Annie: HOT BLOODED is red hot! Readers will see more of the world and the paranormal creatures that Carlson has in this book floored me. So intriguing and unique, I loved how this book opened up the world to all the different paranormal elements. This book feels bigger and better than the first!

Angela: I equally love FULL BLOODED and HOT BLOODED. Ms. Carlson is consistent with providing an amazingly elaborate world building and well developed characters. She kept me glued to every page attempting to absorb the details of the story. The intrigues of the pack business, politics with the vampires, witches and most importantly Jessica’s maturity into her status made this book such an exciting read.

What would you have liked to see more or less of in this book?

Suz: I would have liked to see more of the romance between Rourke and Jess, I have to say I don’t 100% feel their romance as we haven’t seen them together that much, something which I imagine will change alot in the next installment of the series. Also, the action part of the book got a little bit repetitive I just wanted to hurry them up to the final showdown so we could see Rourke again! Also one teensy tiny irritation with me was Danny the English werewolf… as an English person I really hope people don’t think I talk like that lol!

Annie: I would have loved to see more of Rourke. Call me a Rourke hussy, it’s just the truth. Since most of this book is spent on Jessica finding Rourke, they don’t have much time together but when they do, it’s magic! I want a whole book on Rourke…preferably with some nekkid time.
Also, I love the humor that Carlson infuses into her books. More of that would be nice, especially since Jessica kicks ass while saying something especially witty and smart.

Angela: I really had to think about this question and I could not find anything I would like to see less of. But I would definitely would love to see more of Rourke. He just made such a big impact on Jessica’s life, the pack and me as a romance reader. After Full Blooded, I could not wait to see more of them together as I was rooting for their love to progress further. Unfortunately, due to circumstances of the story there just was not enough of him here. And when Roarke made his appearance, I just ate up the pages like an addict in need. Something about him exudes power and lust that’s just waiting to be explored.

What do you think of Jess and Rourke?

Suz: I like them! I think potentially they will make a fabulous couple and I can’t wait to see more of them being together in Cold Blooded the next book in the series.

Annie: I think they are amazing together! I only wished there was more time together in this book! They have amazing chemistry and whenever Rourke says something especially sexy, I melt!
I also really like the way Jessica’s character is developing. Her human side and her wolf side sometimes clash so seeing that struggle is entertaining and makes for some fun interactions. I can’t wait to see her come into her skin more fully.

Angela: Ms. Carlson knows how to provide a true kick-ass-heroine because Jessica McClain is all that and then some. She had truly grown to be a strong woman in the midst of war in a man’s world. And the progress of her very being just intrigued me…as it is in the “prophecy’ and in her “blood”. I get goose bumps to think what she can be and what she can do. As far as Roarke, well, we all know he is very special to Jessica. He is with power, sex appeal and experience, unfortunately, we did not get to witness most of it as he was detained. The romance, well, there’s just something about shifters being mated. Through Jessica’s eyes, we experience how she truly feels for him. Not only that she is mated to Colin Rourke, she is utterly in love with him.

If there was a spin off book, which character would you like to see?

Suz: Jessica’s brother Tyler, I have a soft spot for him!

Annie: ooohhh, good one! Yes, I love love love Tyler and would definitely read that series is Carlson should decide to write about him!

Angela: I really would love, love to see Rourke’s POV on his experience while in captive. That thought strikes my curiousity. During the time he was gone, we really didn’t see what was done to him, what he was thinking and how he survived it all.

    Annie: OH GOOD ONE ANG!!!

Any final thoughts? Are you going to be reading the next book in the series?

Suz: I really liked this book, it was action packed and full of excitement I will definitely be reading the next book in this series

Annie: Hell yeah I am! I need to know what happens next! That ending has me anxious for the next book! HOT BLOODED is a solid instalment to the series. Bringing forth magic and mayhem, this series continues to shine in a sea of sameness.

    Angela:
Jessica McClain is one of the best UF shifter series out there and I’m expecting more great reads from Ms Carlson. I will be reading the next installment, no doubt about that!

Amanda Carlson is not a one hit wonder. Hot Blooded is nice addition to the Jessica McClain series.
Jessica is a freak in the supe world. She is the only female werewolf and she's only been able to shift for
about a week or so where as other werewolves can shift once they hit puberty. Jessica maybe a late bloomer but she is
    becoming a bad chick fast!
Three werewolves, two vamps and a human walk into a bar..... Picture this motley crew on a journey Lord of the Rings style
with Rourke being "my precious". Jessica leads her brother, Tyler and friend, Danny on a quest to save her new found mate, Rourke.
The werewolves get help from sibling vamps that's on loan from the Vampire Queen. Since werewolves and vamps don't like each
other the tense is on during the trip. Plus throw in Ray, the human cop that would like nothing more than to see Jessica in jail.
This group is not braiding each other's hair and making s'mores around the camp fire.

So the group takes a long and dangerous
hike up a mountain, battling some of the weirdest creatures from the Underworld. And with each new encounter Jessica learns
more and more about her special abilities. But with her new abilities more and more questions pop up as to what hell she actually
is and what it will mean to the future of the supe world.
I can't wait to read Cold Blooded in October.

Quick start right back into the world with Jessica. Jessica starts right off throwing punches as she has always done all her life. Fighting to survive. Love the heart racing start early on, and holds to it through out.

Jessica's mind is made up and she won't let anyone stop her. The drive is pushing her. She will go through any and all sorts of hell to find and get Rourke, her mate, back. Jessica is so different and learning of the supernatural world, along with herself, as she goes. Even the world of demons, which the werewolves have never dealt with. New beings and creatures are going to come at the top-of-the-food-chain wolves, and they are going to have to get ready for it. With Jessica at their side.

Jessica is more powerful than she ever even imagined. And others are taking all this in along with what they can learn from the prophecies. Demons are surfacing, and in the end have Jessica on their short list.

Jessica makes new allies. Ones she might be grateful to have, but also ones that might cause a stir in the werewolf world, and maybe even the supernatural world as a whole. I really liked the new friends we come across here, and how they open up the supe world to us sharing knowledge. Wonderful new bonds created.

We end the book with questions of a few, but the story of finding Rourke is completed here. There are new happenings to come, and the ending sets those up to come. Dang, can't wait for Cold Blooded!!

Constant heart-racing read, keeping the heart pounding with fevered worry and anticipation as Jessica fights for her love, friends, and her life.
