Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Robin Overby Cox
"Animals that Adapt to Great Heat" forms the subtitle for this title in the "Animal Extremes" series from Picture Window Books. Using a funky font and varied media for illustrations, the author talks the reader through a host of questions and answers about animal habitats and adaptations, from hot to hottest. Using the question, "Can any animal exist in a hotter climate?" the author introduces the monarch butterfly and red-spotted toad in Mexico, the fennec fox in Africa, and the North American antelope, jackrabbit, and long-tailed pocket mouse. Each double-page spread includes a thermometer, depicting the animals' habitat temperatures in both Fahrenheit and Celsius. Finally, a vertical spread provides a review of these extremes, as well as a glossary for young readers. The author includes suggestions for visits to the library and web. A favorite with young readers, this book is sure to be read and reread by youngsters who are fascinated with wild animals in tough circumstances.
