A broken truck, a broken career, and a breakup heard around the world land superstar John Tennessee McCord in Hellcat Canyon. Legend has it that hearts come in two colors there: gold or black. And that you can find whatever you’re looking for, whether it’s love . . . or trouble. JT may have found both in waitress Britt Langley.

His looks might cause whiplash and weak knees, but Britt sees past JT’s rough edge and sexy drawl to a person a lot like her: in need of the kind of comfort best given hot and quick, with clothes off and the lights out.

Her wit is sharp but her eyes and heart—not to mention the rest of her—are soft, and JT is falling hard. But Britt has a secret as dark as the hills, and JT’s past is poised to invade their present. It’s up to the people of Hellcat Canyon to help make sure their future includes a happily ever after.

“Julie Anne Long’s writing glows with emotional intensity and strong, passionate characterization.” JAYNE ANN KRENTZ

Bestseller Long, known for her historical Pennyroyal Green series, has a brilliant, quirky style that gives her first contemporary a delightful gleam. Her clever phrases make her small-town setting and characters seem fresh and new. Locals are charmingly astonished when star actor John Tennessee McCord’s broken truck lands him in the small town of Hellcat Canyon, Calif. J.T. is swiftly smitten by waitress Britt Langley when she uses the word enigmatic in conversation over his lunch order. Having escaped a disastrous marriage, Britt protects her heart with an “invisible force field” that can’t quite hold off J.T.’s genuineness, intelligence, and charm. J.T. is a hero who puts Britt’s needs over his own, and Britt finds she understands J.T.’s deepest yet unacknowledged desire. The entire town roots for their romance, which is endangered more by Britt’s fears and some realistic, understandable miscommunications than by the possible return of J.T.’s former girlfriend, a fellow star whose posters plaster the town. This laugh-out-loud treat is warmly emotional and richly satisfying. Agent: Steve Axelrod, Axelrod Agency. (June)

On track to put her life back together after an abusive marriage and a bitter divorce, wary Britt Langley has settled into life in tiny, quaint Hellcat Canyon, CA, and the last thing she's looking for is another man—especially one like so-out-of-her-league TV star J.T. (John Tennessee) McCord. But J.T. isn't about to take no for an answer, and Britt's not about to give in—setting the scene for a sometimes prickly yet more often touching relationship that, like Britt's "rescue plants," is a joy to watch come to life. Sweet, spicy, and just plain fun, this lively romance introduces a laid-back Gold Country town, rich with history and teeming with characters you'll want to know better, and launches an engaging, laughter-filled community series that won't let readers go. VERDICT A departure from Long's historical "Pennyroyal Green" titles, Hellcat Canyon has the same offbeat, small-town vibe and rural charm, promising another terrific series. Long (The Legend of Lyon Redmond) lives in Northern California.
Kirkus Reviews
When a down-on-his-luck actor washes up in quaint Hellcat Canyon, it shakes up long-buried feelings for a lonely waitress. Will John Tennessee McCord land Britt Langley in hot water, or will he just add heat to her lukewarm life? J.T. is fresh from being dumped and rejected for a part he was born to play when his truck breaks down in Hellcat Canyon. He stumbles into the local watering hole, the Misty Cat Tavern, and lands at one of Britt's tables. They trade some sparkling dialogue and are immediately attracted to one another, but as is always the way, they both have a fair amount of baggage. J.T.'s is a Wikipedia page full of bad-boy stories. Britt's is an abusive marriage that ended well before her husband died in a car accident. They settle into what Britt assumes is a temporary (and superhot) fling, and then real life steps in to complicate things. Woven into Britt and J.T.'s courtship are the stories of Hellcat Canyon's citizens, who are as complex and nuanced as the language the author uses to describe them. Mrs. Morrison, Britt's neighbor, is still handy with a shotgun at 92 and drinks her rum on the rocks with Dr. Pepper. Sherrie and Glenn, who own the Misty Cat, keep things spicy in the golden years of their marriage pretending to be a stranded mermaid and a sexy fisherman. This book is a treat to read. The author's love of wordplay is evident in the snappy dialogue that the hero and heroine trade, and it's damn sexy. Long's ability to create a love story that leaps off the page is as impressive as her characters are likable and dynamic. Let's hope she keeps cranking them out for a long time.

This was my first book by Ms. Long, but it won't be my last. This is a delightful story of an artistic woman named Britt who ended up in Hellcat Canyon somewhat by mistake, but she is contented with her life there and the folks who live there absolutely adore her. Along comes J. T. McCord, a famous and gorgeous actor, and he throws Britt right off her balance. The bantering between Britt and J.T. is cute and clever and the people in the community are quite endearing. Thanks Ms. Long, for the fun read. You've picked up a new follower.

I absolutely loved this book. I downloaded it based on a 'sponsored' post on Facebook. I have never read anything by Julie Anne Long before but I have already pre-ordered her next Hellcat Canyon book. I laughed out loud, I smiled while reading (which made my husband wonder what the heck was making me grin!) - I didn't want the story to end. The wedding toast was the best and I have bookmarked it for easy access. I read the book over the long weekend and wished there was more. Thank you for the entertainment - I really recommend this book.

I always wonder what's going to happen when a author moves from historical to contemporaries. Some do it well, others not so much. I'm glad that Julie Ann Long did. I really enjoyed her Hot In Hellcat Canyon. It's not that I don't like reading historical's, I do, it's just that I'm very picky with them so it's hard to find ones I like. More and more lately I don't even try. I think it's more that I'm burnt out right now with them. But contemporaries, I'm into at the moment. Which means I can now try Long. I did have a little problem getting into it but that only lasted the first chapter. I'm not sure why? I just figure it was me. And since but chapter two I was enjoying it.... You will love the little town of Hellcat Canyon. It's full of fun wonderful characters that will make you laugh. At first I wasn't sure what I would think of J.T., I'm not really in to rock stars or actors as hero's and heroine's in my books. But I found J. T. to be so sweet and lovable. He was very down to earth and real. I loved how the town reacted to him and how he reacted to them. He might be a crazy flirt, but I think that covers for a person that wants to please people and make them happy. Britt on the other hand was a harder nut to crack. I wasn't at first sure how I thought about her. Might be why I didn't care for the beginning of the story. Soon I got her number too. She puts up walls to hide the real her. As a couple these two are so good together. You really want them to find their happy-ever-after. ARC received for a honest review

After his life implodes for all the world to see superstar John Tennessee McCord decides it's time for a little R&R outside of the spotlight. He sets out on a journey of self discovery, which seems to be going well until his truck breaks down and leaves him momentarily stranded in the little town of Hellcat Canyon. So he heads to a little local cafe in search of help and maybe a meal and ends up discovering something far better... a gorgeous waitress named Britt Langley. The minute Britt Langley sets her sights on her tall, dark, and handsome stranger that waltzes through the door of the cafe she knows he's trouble... the good kind of trouble! But she's not in the market for man, the one she just got rid of did enough damage to last a lifetime and she has no intentions of signing herself up for that again. After talking to J.T. she can tell that he is in need of saving, but she's not so sure she is the woman for the job, she has enough of her own troubles that are constant lurking. But there is something about this smooth talking stranger that is wearing her resistance down, and causing her to reconsider a little roll in the hay... This was my first read by this author and I have to say it made a pretty impressive first impression, and earned her a spot on my "go to" authors list. The minute I started this one I was hooked and dying for more, these two uniquely crafted characters pulled me into their world and commanded my attention. They completely won me over with their witty one liners, quirky southern charm, down to earth personalities, and passion filled heated banter. I highly recommend you give this read a try, it is one of those reads that will have you in tears one moment and laughing the next, and is certain to leave you with an overall feeling complete literary satisfaction!
